November 17, 2004: A North Korean Freedom Movement?

Hopeful signs have apparently surfaced.

It's Thursday in Japan and I have received email from Kyoto from Mongai Kome, frequent commenter on this blog. His morning paper (Sankei Shinbun) is reporting anti-regime flyers being posted in over fifty places in North Korea. This public display of disobedience in that benighted country is unprecedented and has been going on for the last month. Here is Mongai:

The most prevalent flyer is called the "sixteen lies" of tyrant Kim and his tyrant father and it takes apart the fundamental myths and propaganda regarding the cult of the Kims and outlines the failings of the regime. Another flyer is based on the thesis that Kim Jong-il killed his father (perhaps some propaganda in and of itself but a brilliant move given the traditions of the Korean culture.)

Here is hoping things happen in twos and in Iran and North Korea justice will be done, and done soon, and done of, by, and for the people there with a little help from friends.

From earlier in his email, Mongai means Bush and Rice who he is happy are in office, considering the circumstances. But I think if Kim Jong-il is finally going to be gotten rid of, we already know who is going to do it.

If this is true, and it is a pretty big IF, then we should keep a close eye on the situation. The collapse of the North Korean regime could lead to a very chaotic situation, very fast, with incalculable consequences for all of us.

"Never get involved in a war on an Asian land mass"

        - I can't remember who said it, but the quote stuck in my mind.

I think the quote you are thinking of is...

"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is "Never get involved in a land war in Asia", but only slightly less well known is this: "Never go in against a Sicilian, when *death* is on the line."

I think you mingled that with this quote...

"Am I going MAD, or did the word "think" escape your lips? You were not hired for your brains, you hippopotamic land mass."

:)

Great movie.

Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father: prepare to die.

Westley: "To the pain," means the first thing you lose will be your feet below the ankles, then your hands at the wrists, next your nose.
Prince Humperdinck: And, then my tongue I suppose. I killed you too quickly the last time; a mistake I don't mean to duplicate tonight.
Westley: I wasn't finished. The next thing you lose will be your left eye, followed by the right . . .
Prince Humperdinck: And, then my ears, I understand. Let's get on with it.
Westley: Wrong! Your ears you keep, and I'll tell you why. So that every shriek of every child at seeing your hideousness will be yours to cherish, every babe that weeps at your approach, every woman who cries out: "Dear God, what is that thing?" will echo in your perfect ears. That is what "to the pain" means. It means I leave you in anguish, wallowing in freakish misery, forever.

Now back to North Korea. I have flown over North Korean many times in Falcon 4.0 and it looks like a really nice place. Very Green.
I am sure that their leader is trying his hardest to do the right thing. I am sure things will work itself out.

All this waiting for the DEO board is starting to drive me a bit loopy.

Hopefully his "Ceausescu moment" (http://cupjoe.com/Articles/Ceaucescu.htm) is not far off ... perhaps the North Korean people have been emboldened by they changes they've seen in Iraq, Libya, etc. ...

I think old Kim is dead.

There have been reports of anti Kim pamphlets circulating as well as his picture being removed from offical buildings and streets and less over the top rhetoric and praise of the great leader. I'll post a link later to some of the reports if anyone is interested. Of course there is nothing overtly to show that he is dead, like mass celebrations or anything. Just a guess. I have a 50/50 chance of being right, either he is dead or he isn't  :D He appeared on TV in the last couple of days minus the usual fawning praise but aparently there was nothing to indicate whne the broadcast was recorded.

Damn, you beat me to it. Vizzini is a great character.

Good to hear that some people are speaking their mind, despite potential consequences. Something's gotta give eventually. I just hope this isn't one of those small short-lived (literally) groups that gets squashed a hundred years or so before the successful movement comes along.

My understanding is that the situation on the Korean peninsula still only remains an official 'cease fire'.......My guess is that this would mean Canada,as an original participant in the UN sanctioned 'police action' would be obligated to to participate again, should things go sideways........I think it's only a matter of time before things heat up even more over there. North Korea has no money, no resources and it can't feed it's population without international help.......Now they have nukes.......Countries that have little to lose, have less to lose by going to war to get what they need......."TEAM AMERICA F*** YEAH!"

Kimchee anyone?

PS - Anyone know if I can order one of those Kim Jong Il marionettes from the movie? ;D

Team America is so funny.

And kimchee is good stuff. Only last week I managed to get some, after like 2 months of being without kimchee. I have regained my koreanness. ;) :D

On serious note, serious balls those dissidents have to publish stuff like this. IMO North Koreans have been repressed so long that they forgot what liberty looks like, let alone what to do when they have it.

100% agree!

I have some Korean friends who sware that the two last huge expolsions in HK, the train explosion and the other "unknown" one was attempts on HK's beloved Leader...
Wishful thinking maybe...  but funny the train explosion happened just a few hours or less after El Presidentle passed...
