Mods:  I know I'm stretching the definition of "equipment", and feel free to flip this elsewhere, but I'm thinking if I can find this kind of answer ANYWHERE, it would be on Army.ca.

Just came home from a regimental function, and some people were saying they can't find anyplace where a ram's head (with the jewelled snuff box in the skull) can be cleaned.  They've tried several sources, but nobody returns calls or nobody knows where to go.

Where does one get a ceremonial ram's head cleaned these days?

Post or PM with contact info for such a business greatly appreciated - thanks in advance.

I believe the technique is to leave it at the front door of the most junior Officer, with a note on the forehead that says, "CLEAN".  Ring the doorbell, and run away.  ;D  Problem should take care of itself.

Have you tried a taxidermist?  Are you looking cleaning the animal part, or the jeweled snuff box part?  If you have an allied regiment in Britian, you may want to give them a call and see what they do with theirs.

Dirt Digger - you're avatar is awesome!!! I am wondering though, where did you find people protesting the closure of a Mercedes dealership ? Must have been in Alberta or something.... ;)

My understanding is both.

Will suggest trying taxidemist.  Any other hints always welcome.

What exactly is required to be cleaned off of said head and jewel box? A furrier would be the place to get the hide/head cleaned and a jeweller for the snuff box (not just any jeweller but one that does restoration work - I had a similar dilemma cleaning the bear skin rug hubby brought home from the mess after they decided it needed a new home in its retirement.  It smelled stinky from years of cigarette smoke.  I sent it to a furrier to be cleaned and a taxidermist to refurbish the teeth, claws etc.)

Looking over Sir Iain as I took some snuff, it looks like it could use a bit of a dusting and work on the jewellery...

If it's just dust and residue, a furrier will do it no problem.  For the box, you might want to try a restorative jeweller or an art conservation student (they like to practice their trade under supervision of course).  http://www.cci-icc.gc.ca/main_e.aspx

Thanks, everyone, for the great advice - will share!
