I go to Trent University, and in the school paper there was an article about Remembrance Day, and how it promotes "the othering" of people, and creates and "us vs them" atmosphere. Well war IS us vs them. I can understand objections to the Afghanistan mission, and even critiques of the army as an institution, but to question Remembrance Day? We have all the other days of the year to address all the injustice in the world. I suppose I could identify myself with the "left" if labels must be used, but it seems the "left" (at least on my campus) are so open minded that their brains are falling out of their heads.

Ahhh...the university intellectual still thrives, I see. Unfettered by anything so pedestrian as reality or responsibility, their minds are free to wander. But fortunately, as they quite weak minds, they usually don't get very far. Us remembering our war sacrifices is the militaristic "othering" of people, while them worshipping the memories of Che Guevara or the Spanish Civil War Volunteers is only right and glorious. Have I got that right?

As Winston Churchill is alleged to have said: ""Any man under 30 who is not a liberal has no heart, and any man over 30 who is not a conservative has no brains."

          Don't get all down on university kids now. I go to York which I've been told, by people who don't go here, is the new centre of Marxism in the universre; left as left gets type of thing, anti-everything. On Novemeber 10th I had the pleasure of escorting a blind Legion memeber, who was selling his poppies, for a bathroom break. In the 10min I spent with him he made a crap load of money as we were constantly stopped by kids, many cash strapped. One kid wouldn't let him at the urinal until he could slip a fiver in the box.  That was certainly not the only bill he got either.  Yes there are those at university a bit out of touch with things, but anything does and should be open for comment and debate at univeristy.  That said, there are many many more that arn't impetuous poli. sci. students, and while these others may have only passing thoughts about military life and service, somewhere in their bones they understand and will give give give. Even if it means the poor guy can hardly get to the bathroom...
