Geez, seems like everyone that posts on here is really gung-ho about last minute help or questions, posting with fevered desperation as if an imminent answer might help them defuse a bomb. [/observation]

In comparison, my problem seems rather simple. I just finished my second of year of university and I'm planning on taking this coming year off to work and pay off debts before I enroll in the ROTP. A good officer keeps his economic affairs in order, right?

I was just wondering, would it be in my best interests to join the reserve now for the next year and transfer to ROTP to be in school next September? Because it would be time served and time in grade, right? I appreciate any advice you guys have! :)

Short answer, yes. My advice would be to stay in school if there is any way you can afford to and either go ROTP now or join the reserves. Take it from someone who's been there, it's much harder to go back once you leave.

Hi,

Have you thought of searching the forum?

I don't know about whether or not taking time off school is better or worse for your military career but I'd say that whether or not you find it difficult to return to school is totally personal. I went to university for two years then was off for a year then returned for two more years and didn't find it difficult at all. But then again, I enjoy school.

My only advice is:

Don't make your thread title look like something my 15 year old step-daughter posts on her Facebook status ;D

Dude,

Don't make it sound like it's the end of the world if you don't get an answer in the next 5 minutes.  It makes you look just that much less mature.  Take the time to research, as people have said already, you have plenty of time to make a decision.

I personally think its almost a good thing the CF takes a while, it actually gives you time to prepare, mentally and physically. For myself even though the chances are 50/50 they will accept me I figure I got about 6-12mths to prepare, (letters, pardon, and clean up debts, and get back in shape) Just my thoughts on it.

My suggestion is continue your university.

Is your current debt a government-funded source? IE, OSAP in Canada, Federal student loans? Keep in mind that six months after you "finish school" (degree in hand or not) you will be needing to start paying it all back (which I know is your intent). However, the reason I state this is if you are NOT accepted to ROTP and you DO have a job over the next year, the next time you sign up and apply for student loans, you'll have too high salary from the past year and likely will NOT get any student loan funding whatsoever. (They don't go based on projected income but actual past months of income... so if you spent all your money paying back the school, you won't have any squirreled away which is what they are expecting you to have done...)  So, you may find yourself a year from now NOT accepted to ROTP *and* unable to take out student loans to finish off your degree. Then you'll really be screwed.

My suggestion (and you asked!) is to go into the reserves AND continue with your university. Why not have a job AND go to school? Not sure what the reserves do with regards to uncompleted BAs with regards to officer positions-- you'll have to check but I am suspecting you may need to go in as NCM and change later. Call the reserve unit and ask, because I have no idea how that works. But, the experience is absolutely invaluable regardless. I'm a firm believer in understanding the jobs and positions of those whom you may one day be a leader to as an officer.  Keep in mind though, if you go air-force reserves, it's the regular basic training you go through and will require the 14-weeks which will affect your schooling for the upcoming year. If you go to the other ones, it's different. Call your local recruiter :)

Oops, I was reading those topics you posted Alea (Thanks again!) and I mis-communicated - what I wanted to do was go to the RMC next year, not a civilian university in the ROTP, I just got my terms mixed up a bit.

No problem Kynaeus and "oops" ;) good communication is the key to everything in life

You will find a lot of threads concerning RMC on the forum.

Enjoy,
Alea
