Ontario Government (Conservative majority), 2025-29

For sure. But one has to be careful what one wishes for, though.

I'd bet a loonie more than a few people who like that wouldn't like the idea of NDP-minded judges being elected.

You aren't claiming that Canadian judges are politically motivated now are you ? Heavens above!

First Nations getting a bit of a carve out for consultation on big projects ....

Let's see how all sides define "meaningfully," "consults," and "First Nations in the area."

On that last bit on "in the area" and recent Queen's Park protests, one of the main groups doing the protesting is the "First Nations Land Defence Alliance," which includes one FN (whose former Chief is mentioned in at least one media report as chair of the group) that's about 640km as the crow flies from the Ring of Fire.

To them it is all traditional land to be defended. To them, a Reserve or treaty area is a white man's construct.

The people of Grassy Narrows might be excused from being a little sensitive since they have been drinking mercury-laden water for years due to a upstream paper mill.

Wait until they start to put meat on the bones of the decision to house nuclear waste underground near Ignace.

True to a point, but it’s a bit of a stretch to include the Ring of Fire as areas traditionally used by a community historically located near Kenora.

100% - and they have had aggressive advocacy networks & partnerships in place for a long time. This is part of their rationale for Ring of Fire concerns.

Oh yeah …

None of this is new....30 years ago they were making revenue sharing agreements for a portion of crown timber dues in the Red Lake area being funneled to the local First Nations. But only for mills north of X Latitude and no revenue sharing for communities south of the magic line

Hopefully it better aligns with cultural groups as opposed to straight line decisions....questions is ripple effects and implications for changes elsewhere.

To some, it's all Turtle Island and Mother Earth.

Besides, it's an alliance of several FNTs - he just happens to be from Grassy Narrows.

Some of it might also be smaller, more isolated communities happy to have access to colleagues with experience (20+ years) of getting media/public attention at least at Queen’s Park to Indigenous issues.

A few places actually rethinking having a license to sell liquor?

I suspect many stores will be re-thinking their liquor licence, particularly if sales aren't all that robust. Very few want to commit the staff and storage space (both usually in short supply) for deposit returns. I was grocery shopping today and had to ask a staffer where a certain item was and, after checking a few logical places, he said that with having to shoe-horn in shelf space for booze, the store ends up shoving other products wherever they can find space.

With the loss of sales, The Beer Store can't economically stick around just as a deposit return service. It would be interesting to know what their numbers are like.

And since I suspect companies pay big money for shelf location, they might be less than pleased being moved about to maybe less desirable spaces.

True dat - and it would be interesting to see.

BC has an entire recycling system outside of the retailers (retailers also must accept empties, but are allowed to place very reasonable limits on how many per day).

I am sure Ontario, with all of it’s financial resources, could figure this out, too.

According to the Interweb, all provinces except Ontario and Manitoba have some manner of deposit-return system for beverage containers.

Here's hoping this works to get more health professionals into Ontario faster ....

Its another case of beggar your neighbour. Instead of us fixing our own problems, we are hoping to pinch these individuals off the US.

There should be a mandatory increase, tied to the population increase of the province, every year or every 2yrs of the number of meds students/nurses accepted into university/college programmes. Population of Ontario increases 2.1% over 2yrs - then the number of individuals accepted into the medical field increases 2.1% in the fall of that year. If the province loses 1.6% year over year of medically licensed individuals to death, retirement, leaving the professions, emigrating elsewhere, then the number of new spots in the medical field increases by 1.6% the following year.

There is no way that the number of spots in Universities/Colleges is increasing by those numbers every year.

You're right, that would solve the input part of the equation. In the case of nurses, though, unless there's also mo' money put into staffing, say, hospitals and nursing homes, they end up getting trained and leaving.

Same with the docs, but maybe to a lesser extent since they can go fee for service.

Lots of slices of Swiss cheese to line up here, including residencies for the docs.

Another unnecessary impediment to expansion of trade. In other parts of Canada we have successfully demonstrated that there are alternatives for collecting beverage containers with refundable deposits.
