I was surfing the web the other day, and noticed a group dedicated to making the state of Vermont a Canadian province.

Remember Howard Dean? When he was running for president in 2004 he was attacked as a "Canadian lite" for his policies, and he was also a very progressive governor while he was running Vermont. Apparently according to one poll abou 14% of people from Vermont wanted the state to secede from the union, but I doubt it'll ever happen. I put that in the same league as Northern Ontario wanting to secede from Ontario to become part of Manitoba.

Do you thinks its even possible for Ontario to go independent. Economically it could make it but its right in the middle of Canada and the country would be split. Also the capital of Canada is in Ontario.

I'm sorry, but Canada already has enough of this BS coming through our airways on CNN. Once again, disgruntled lefties who didn't get their way so their pouting... except instead of pouting in their room, they want to move out.

Okay, so their not just lefties, their pot smoking lefties who don't want to have a date with 'ol sparky' for smokin up.

According to the United Nations, Canada is the best country in the world for providing access to education.

But unfortunately the entire education system has been going down the drains and creating more pot smokin lefties.



I'm sorry, but I managed to pull a real good laugh out of this. We've already got Michael Moore trying to get Americans to marry Canadians so they can have free health care, we don't need any more of this.

An independent Ontario would end up importing food, fuel and raw materials from the western provinces, only now at disadvantageous rates. I suspect the authors of this and similar manifesto's stop at the "wouldn't it be cool if" stage (observe the PQ and BQ's aggressively demanding their proposed new nation have all the rights and privileges of.....a Canadian province) without considering all the potential consequences of their plan. The first time people reached the customs post at the Ontario./Manitoba border (or the border of an independent Alberta for that matter) their tune would change pretty quick.

The complete lack of historical context or even any realistic appraisal of Canada made the Vermontcanada website as realistic as a Micheal Moore movie.

I don't think ontario would be wise to separate. In fact there was a time when the Turms and Caicos was being considered added to our nation. How about instead of shrinking the country we expand it.

There are alot of independence groups. Theres the western provinces, Ontario, Quebec, Cape breton, Newfoundland. If one is sucessful the country will fall.

What I love about the Western Block Party is how one of the supposed "values" Eastern Canada is shoving down the west's throat is education, and apparently medicare, which is really idiotic since medicare was started in the west.

I think that people just join independence groups simply because they have nothing better to do. In all honesty I have my gripes with Canada, but in the end its still one of the best countries to live in, and I would always take Canada as my home before any other country.

Ontario could benefit seeing as it makes half of Canadas GDP, and if all the money went towards Ontario it could be much richer. But Because of where its located within Canada i dont see it happening untill the west, or Quebec breaks off.

I don't see it ever happening. I've lived in Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, Manitoba, and Alberta, and so far I've loved every part of this country. I'd much rather see all of us sticking it out together.

From when I was in Quebec, I loved that province and the people. If they left, then I'm sure the rest of confederation would simply break apart.

How would Ontario benefit from independence?

Well, my guess is that they wouldn't have to pay into equalisation anymore. I remember Dalton McGuinty carrying on about a $23 billion gap in what Ontario pays in and what it gets out. That's a pretty substantial amount of money.

I really think this is more of a fringe idea than an actual item of pressing concern for the average Ontarian.

I think it's a whole sarcastic thing toward quebec separatist(and the French origins, still thinking they should have won that Quebec battle), with the queen Victoria day and this Loyalist origins thing, this guy is obviously joking. Or Maybe he doesn't know that the natives beat the american army during the 1812 canada-usa war.

As for the Vermont joining in Canada, they're 100% welcome, even if they kicked some loyalist ontarian asses previously ;D. We might as well get all New England, Washington, California and Minnesota(the only real hockey state in US) states merge in Canada. As for a new name, i got no idea.

I remember reading online about a group of people that wanted to take Maine back for Canada since it was stolen in the war of 1812.
