Could someone tell me what the side opened pouches on the utility pouches where used for? Also was there o.d. combat sweat suits, if so, when where they used and how many was isued?

The side opened pouches were used to hold M67 grenades.

A green sweatsuit was issued back in the mid 80's at CFRS.  We received one each.

IIRC the bottoms are open, so yes, a smoke grenade would fit. However, if it's a smoke without a spoon, you're going to need to secure it somehow as it'll just slip out the bottom.

I don't recall seeing anyone carry the smoke grenades anywhere but inside of the pouch, not in the frag grenade holders on the sides.

I was a rifleman back then, if you were not a C9 gunner, the utility pouch was used for cam sticks, gun cleaning stuff and a field message pad, extra butts, choc bars.  I left IMPs in the outer pockets of my ruck whether light infantry or mech infantry.  Rain coat went in the butt pack with any other personal stuff (I carried a soild fuel stove I got from Suffield Brits).

Agreed, never saw smoke gren carried there.  I was never a C9 gunner, C2 only.  When we wore 82 pat web gear, I wore 2 utility pouches.  On one of them, I had a bayonet frog sewn on the side and wore my bayonet there.

Yep, seems to be a yearly thing:  joeye11svcbn in 2009, naughty15tracy in 2010 and now kimoneal16 in 2011.  Wonder what the user name will be next year?

Guess I have my answer.  ::)  Mods, isn't there some rule about not having multiple accounts here or have all the others been banned deleted?
