Parachute Accident
Mar, 08 2006 - 8:20 PM

A HORRIFYING PARACHUTE ACCIDENT IN THE SKIES OVER CFB MOUNTAINVIEW THIS MORNING.
A CANADIAN SOLDIER SUFFERED SERIOUS INJURIES AFTER HIS CHUTE FAILED TO OPEN PROPERLY.
THE SOLDIER'S NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED.

HE WAS ON A TRAINING EXERCISE RUN BY THE "CANADIAN FORCES PARACHUTE CENTRE" AT CFB TRENTON.
DETAILS OF THE ACCIDENT ARE SKETCHY.
BUT WE DO KNOW THE SOLDIER DID NOT LAND IN A DESIGNATED DROP ZONE AFTER PRACTICE JUMPING FROM A HERCULES AIRCRAFT.
THE PLANE'S ALTITUDE IS NOT KNOWN.
THERE ARE REPORTS THE SOLDIER WAS CONSCIOUS WHEN EMERGENCY CREWS FOUND HIM AROUND 9 O'CLOCK.
HE HAS SINCE BEEN TRANSFERRED TO KINGSTON GENERAL HOSPITAL... WITH SERIOUS INJURIES.
CAPTAIN NICOLE MESZAROS:

"WELL CERTAINLY THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT WILL BE INVESTIGATED TO FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT WENT WRONG DURING THIS PARA-JUMP, IF THERE IS ANYTHING IN THE INVESTIGATION THAT POINTS OUT THAT THINGS NEED TO BE CHANGED IN THE FUTURE.
UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE, THE CANADIAN PARACHUTE CENTRE HAS SUSPENDED ALL JUMPING, CERTAINLY WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THE SAFETY OF OUR SOLDIERS IS UPHELD."

Heard this this morning on the news.  Serious injuries aren't critical injuries though, and there are certainly worse kinds of parachute accidents.  All this being said, I hope that the soldier gets well soon, that there are no lasting effects of this mishap, and that this is the last training accident I hear about for some time.  We have enough issues with those in the sandbox, we don't need home-grown issues.

Hang in there trooper.

Here's hoping that everything works out well for the as-yet unidentified soldier.
:salute:

TRENTON -- A Canadian soldier is in a Belleville hospital with serious injuries after being hurt in a parachute jump.

Capt. Nicole Meszaros of CFB Trenton says the accident happened at the base's Mountain View facility at 9 a.m. yesterday.

Meszaros says the soldier did not land in a designated drop zone after jumping from a CC-130 Hercules air transport. The altitude was not indicated.

Cpl. Denis Coulombe, 26, of the 3rd Battalion of the Royal 22nd Regiment based in Valcartier, was in critical but stable condition at Belleville General Hospital, a press release said.

Meszaros says jumping at the facility has been suspended until further notice and the accident is under investigation.

It was the third parachuting accident -- one of which was fatal -- at Mountain View in less than a year. The Canadian Forces has yet to release the cause of the Canada Day weekend and Oct. 3 accidents.
