Hi to all,

I am a Paramedic working in Nova Scotia, having done my A-EMCA in Ontario and
I was thinking of applying for the army.
Although I have some questions about further training, I have read about the basic trainings offered,
but I would like to know if it is possible to get the Advanced Care Paramedic(ACP)/ALS/Paramedic II training in the army.
Also was curious if it was possible to work in a civilian service at the same time as being in the army.

Thanks for the help with those questions, looking forward to your posts.

From another discussion yesterday.

"You will not be using the complete ACP skill set that you have acquired on civi-street in the CF as it was decided sometime ago not to go with a ACP skill set for our Med Techs but rather a skill based solution (AEC) that met our needs the CF (especially in the field) at the QL5A level.":

Thanks a lot, good reading there and all the informations I required was there but one,
while in the army, is it possible to register to an ACP school and do the course or would the army
not support that education due to the fact medtech do not require the skill set? I am asking because
it seems like the profession is evolving very quickly and I would really like to be up to date with it.

Thanks again for the help!

If possible, try to maintain your licence ( A-EMCA ) for as long as you can:

"I have been a Medic for 11 years.  I'm on my 6Th posting, and have been licensed as a PCP in 5 different provinces.  I have spent thousands of dollars trying to maintain a licence but I have finally given up."

Are you looking to join the Regular Force or Reserves?

I assume you are looking to join Reg F, as you are talking about working on civ service.

You can work with a civ service on your time off and on leave as long as it does not interfere with your Canadian Forces role.

Go to a recruiting center and do a prior learning assessment and they will let you know where you sit as far as for trade training, and further requirements.

As for ACP and EMCA levels of training, my work has had a person return from the AEC program in Moncton, and he confirmed my opinion that paramedic skills are the very basic level (as in, you had better know more to progress to the next rank) of trade knowledge and skill required by a Cpl QL 5 CF med tech.
