Pay distribution from NCM -> Office & vice versa

Hello,

I wanted to inquire as to how the pay distribution was handled when an NCM Cpl signs up for the "University Training Plan Non Commissioned Members" and becomes an officer, per se would he "taking in" an officer's salary after his degree, training etc. Similarly, how about an officer switching to an NCM trade.
Speaking from reference, my brother-in-law who was posted in Gagetown as a Lieutenant (artillery officer) was obviously earning an officer's salary, though when he switched to Comm's Research  OP. (NCM) he is now earning NCM pay. He explained me, although he was not quite sure; if he were to switch back to being an officer, he would still earn NCM wage.
Thanks to anyone who can clarify.

These sorts of pay issues can seem double sided and complex, but here is how it works, in it's simplest form.

If you are promoted, you will not get paid less.  If you voluntarily revert to a lower rank, you will be paid less.  As far as this policy is concerned, any officer outranks any NCM (contrary to popular belief, Sgt to OCdt is technically a "promotion").  So if you go into the UTPNCM program, you have vested rights to your pay, and as an OCdt will earn your old rate of pay which will be higher than any OCdt pay scale.  Through your officer promotions, you will always get a pay raise, even if it means getting plugged into an incentive level that is higher than base rate.  There's a little more to it than that, however.

So in your example, yes if someone went from officer to NCM, they will be paid at their current NCM rank level (voluntary reversion in rank).  If they were to then go back to the officer world, they would continue to get paid their NCM pay *until* they are entitled to a higher rate of pay based on their rank.

I am an OCdt in the UTPNCM program, and am still receiving my old rate of pay until the end of this school year when I receive my commission, then I will have a place in the officer pay scale with regular pay raises, etc.

Hope this answers your question

well,

while on the subject of pay - I got bad news today that my CFAT was 1 point away from officer requirement and tho my recruiter sent my forms to be re-evaluated or "waived" it did not go throught. so now i have the option of rewriting in 3months and hope to meet officer requirements, or start NCM from private rank.

I looked on the forces.ca website for a comparison of 2nd LT / Private - but I find it confusing which rank falls into which group.  Anyone able to tell me [specifically for the 2month summer course] what a private would make, compared to what the officer 2nd LT would make?

I have a degree in criminology and the feild i chose was Artillery.  The work of NCM does not get me down, its the fact I really reeally did want to be rank of officer, and had my hopes set on this.  I am pretty sure I will be re-writing in November 3months from now.

anyone able to shed some light on the pay diff?

thanks in advance for advice or guidance.

If you have a degree, I assume you would be a direct entry officer and not ROTP.  In that case, you would fall into row 'C' on the Officer pay scale.  As for the NCM pay scale, you would be under the "Standard" column unless you were in a specialist trade (and not until a QL5 qualified Corporal).

As for the "2 month summer course" I assume you mean basic training?  First off, neither of them are 2 months, they are both longer, but if it is basic you are asking about, here is your answer.
As an NCM you would be paid at the first NCM pay level ($2806/month).  If you were an officer, you would be an Officer Cadet during basic training, and promoted to 2Lt after graduation.  As for pay, I am 99% sure that you would be paid the OCdt pay ($1567/month) until you are commissioned, at which time you will get paid $3839/month plus back pay to your enrollment date.

Hope this helps
