The increase is just a coorelation with cost of living (which usually is actually 3-4%). Inflation goes up, everythign else costs more, so you should make a bit more.

Hey ghost, sorry to say it but we all deserve a pay increase.. not only that, but we deserve much more respect and "bonuses" from Canada. I think we should be tax exempt, and have an ID card that means something when you show it at businesses. If you have ever been to the US, you‘ll know what I am talking about. I think the government should encourage all businesses in Canada to offer military discounts. As we all know, we have alot of buying power.. Anytime a business tells me they give a military discount, I pass the word to all my co-workers as I think that place should get the "reward" of our money.
Perhaps we can start a catalog of businesses (and their location i.e. city) where they do offer military discounts... I think a lot of the times even if a business does offer discounts, members don‘t know about it...

Oh i completly agree. I really like how US soldiers are exempt from taxes. It makes sence. When im working full time with the military im paying around $800 a month in taxes. I think it would really help out famlies.
The point i was getting at though was that 2.5% of a colonels pay is a lot more then a private or corporal and while everyone in fairness deserves an increase privates and corporals (who make less) pay the same for military housing (or close to) as much higher ranks when they are making obviously a lot more money. Most of this opinion comes from reading "Tarnished Brass" i guess. If even half of the facts int he book is true then it‘s incredable the amount of things generals etc.. have gottena way with. Someone making $170‘000 a year and they have to take money from a privates/corporals cannex fund ($600) to pay for a Tv and VCR. I guess i just don‘t think they need the same amount of increase which translates to even more money for them.

I was actually thinking of doing that as a small task.. go through my local Fredericton yellow pages, starting at "A" and calling each and every business, asking them if they had a military discount. If they didn‘t, I would ask why and suggest that %10 at least would not do too much harm but might give them an advantage over other businesses that provide the same services.. Then I would get all those names and numbers and produce a "military" yellow pages.. sound like a good idea?? Slightly time consuming but I think it would be good.. maybe give us something back for our service?

Let‘s not kid ourselves folks. American service wo/men are NOT tax exempt! The only time that they do not pay income tax is while they are serving in a theatre of War, in that case, that specific month would be exempt from taxes.
As for General‘s making $170,000/year and how wrong an increase for them is... I don‘t believe the PM even makes that kind of money.... Just remember that once you are making 6 figures a minimum of 50% of that money is lost to taxes. So a General that has an income of $110,000 (more realistic) will only see $55,000 of that money. While a young corporal who is in the lowest tax bracket will only lose 15-20% of his Gross monthly earnings to taxes. IF he grossed $40,000/year, he would net $32,000/year. That‘s only a difference of $23,000/year NET ! ! !

Zoomie i‘ve heard justifications like that before. It seems like a good point but somehow i don‘t think its bang on. Theres tons of in‘s and out‘s in the system that generals rape the country for like all expense paid golfing and fishing trips to buisness lunches and paying very little for houses. (Plus a host of other stuff i can‘t rhyme off the top of my head)
I‘m re-reading tested mettle and tarnished brass. I know their very biased in how they paint the canadian generals and command staff at NDHQ (And i don‘t like scott taylor at all as a writer) but if even half of the stuff they wrote in the book is true than it‘s still a major rape of the system. With out going off on a rank how much these idiot generals have costed the military in wasted purchases it‘s just incredable what they can do. Including claiming a .25 cent phone call where as making the claim costs the goverment $4.00.

Doesnt specifically say, but I would assume everyone, since it is a cost of living increase, and is in corollation with inflation, not a raise because the governement loves us....

As a member of the forces, I prefer to e taxed. If our pay were tax free, then i would be reduced to recover what would hae been paid. Buy paying taxes, I can have a higher net income. Taxes can be reducd for buying a new home, paying sudent loans, charity, RRSPs, family medical expences, etc. An untaxed incomme would not care about this.
Then again, if you did well wih a mutual fund or other investment . . .

In real terms, that‘s a new car a year (bought in CASH!) and that sure beats driving around in a sh!tty Geo Metro.
