Alright I am not really a club goer or anything, it just the people who live on the Toronto Islands really really bother me.  The get all kinds of special treatment for what reason?  The don't pay property tax, they shitcanned the bridge to Island airport, and now the managed to have the AGCO yank The Docks liquor licence for noise? I am sorry these people are the biggest bunch of whiners around.  To shut down a place that is a major cash cow for the city to apease the priviledged little yuppies.  The Docks will appeal by why do I see this possibly turn into election issue for Toronto Mayoralty candidates.

Last call at the Docks nightclub being appealed
CTV.ca News Staff

The Docks nightclub was told last call would come early on Monday after the bar and concert venue's liquor license was pulled. But the company will keep the drinks flowing while appealing the decision.

Revoking the Docks' license to sell alcohol is the result of pressure from Toronto Island residents.

People living on the island directly across from the nightclub have long complained of loud noise and music echoing across the water late at night. Lobbying city council, the residents have made their frustration known.

Effective at 5 p.m. Monday, the provincial liquor board declared the bar should be dry.

People who enjoy a drink and the club's party atmosphere are not happy with the decision.

"Absolutely ridiculous," one female patron said Monday.

That sentiment is echoed by the company's lawyer Nick Macos.

A written statement from Macos posted on the company's website Monday called the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario's ruling a "narrow view of the public interest as being represented by the needs and wishes of the Toronto Islands residential community."

Macos notes that the AGCO found no misconduct by the Docks.

An appeal of the AGCO decision would temporarily allow the bar to keep serving drinks.

Macos said the company will file an appeal and remain operating until the courts have made a decision.

"If unsuccessful, then over 350 employees will be out of work," Macos added.

350 employees?  Holy schiße!  How many employees could a bar have?

I still think the residents are a bunch a wanks...they're a big chunk of why a regional QuietSTOL-equipped airline didn't go into the Island Airport...

Cheers

Man alive.....it's like they own the whole lakefront.  The lakefront is for all inhabitants of T.O. to use.....yet it seems that the only people who get what they want when it comes to the lake, is these people. People who pay no f*cking property tax! It must be nice! Must be nice to have a wonderful cottage just a stones throw from Yorkville, or Forrest Hill, or what ever posh area of Toronto these plugs come from. Don't they realise that their cottages are on the lakeshore of a major metropolitan  city filled with millions of people? They ( the islanders) complain about the Indy , the Docks, Wakestock, the Airport....just to name a few. Basically anything that would promote the city , they quash. What right do they have ... to hold a whole city hostage....last time I checked , they didn't own the lake did they?

Its actually not just a "bar" its a whole entertainment complex (Drive-In, Driving Range, Go Karts, Climbing wall, Trapeze, massive outdoor patio).  Plus the "night club" which is actually 3-4 clubs in one.  Its a big place.

my letter to the editor Toronto Sun

Once again, a small but petulant group of whiny, privileged, busybodies has sought to change the waterfront landscape solely for THEIR benefit alone, to the economic detriment to the City of Toronto as a whole. How does this city ever hope to get any meaningful use out of the waterfront, and draw locals and tourists to it for either business or recreational activities, when these islanders continue to act as if the whole island waterfront area is their own private Muskoka to the exclusion of the entire City of Toronto?  At a time when this city is bemoaning the lack of tourists and tourist attractions, two very narrow minded councilors take it upon themselves to crusade  for the effective closure of a highly successful tourist business that generates millions of dollars in revenue for this city.  And for what purpose? To ensure they get re-elected no doubt.  This sends a very disturbing message to other businesses that provide entertainment in this city, and is yet another reason to add to the list of why tourists and businesses of all types stay away from Toronto.

T.O. Miller's no-fun dream

By JOE WARMINGTON

At least now we know who is in charge. Who would have thought a bunch of cottagers -- many of whom don't pay property taxes while living on disputed land -- would have so much clout? Turns out they call the shots.

First, the island airport bridge was killed and now perhaps The Docks. Beware, party boats. Keep your weddings in check!

Welcome to Mayor David Miller's Toronto -- a city where more stuff on the harbour seems to get shut down than what goes up. Old Marx and Lenin would be so proud.

Perhaps soon The Docks will be a vacant wasteland, like the goofy Rochester ferry building -- another Miller success story. "Noise is a huge topic across this city," he told the Sun's Rob Granatstein. "Businesses have to follow the laws. We're a big city, and noise and quiet matter to people, whether it's on the waterfront or elsewhere."

The guy who runs a panhandling business and defecates on the sidewalk daily doesn't seem to follow the rules and still gets to stay -- even if he yells out at the top of his lungs that he is the messiah. He's a messiah who also doesn't pay taxes.

Imagine keeping a straight face while busting a nightclub for being noisy? Serve booze, but keep it down! This is the latest embarrassment in a city that could be so unbelievably great. Even Miller's chief rival, Councillor Jane Pitfield, was complaining there are too many nightclubs in the Entertainment District.

What? That's why they call it the Entertainment District! Maybe council would prefer the buildings to be vacant, or occupied by a "quiet" methadone clinic.

At the city entrance there should be a sign: "No fun." You know you won't see any of these quiet seekers protesting the noise at the Gay Pride Parade, Caribana, after a Maple Leaf playoff win, or a protest against former premier Mike Harris. Nor should they.

Meanwhile The Docks, which recently invested $4 million in renovations, gets no breaks -- tax or otherwise. It's an easy target for a pack of bullies led by the dynamite duo of Councillors Paula Fletcher and Pam McConnell.

"We wanted to shut them up, not shut them down," Fletcher told Granatstein. "But the ACGO is shutting them down because they won't shut up. The city isn't shutting anybody down."

Nudge-nudge, wink-wink. That's why late yesterday, fresh off the kill, city staffers were flexing their muscles, warning other clubs beware. Too bad they wouldn't chase the murderous gangs. Gunfire and sirens are noisy too.

No, the latest victim of the leftist-controlled city and province is The Docks because some granola-eating islanders want to live the life of gentry right inside the city that the rest of us pay taxes in. The Docks pays taxes too.

And its 300 jobs are in jeopardy, thanks to a ridiculous ruling by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission to go all out and "revoke" its liquor licence in mid-summer.

There must have been other things they could have done, says David Knights, who owns one of 10 businesses in limbo at The Docks. "Why didn't they at least wait until the fall?"

Now dozens of university kids are counting on a judge to overturn the decision this Friday.

The place was virtually empty yesterday -- like much of the rest of the portlands. Maybe a tent city would be better? Or a giant safe-injection zone. Don't laugh.

"The city wants that land," said a source, adding The Docks could be a problem for a potential Expo bid.

Docks owner Jerry Sprachman has made no secret of his dream of having a casino -- which doesn't fit Miller's vision of cars and helicopters are bad and bikes are good.

Perhaps council is jealous because The Docks has managed to do what it hasn't. Unlike the city, this guy Sprachman created something unique on the ugly, unused waterfront -- swimming, beach volleyball, golf, live music, dancing, go-karting and even a night at the drive-in movie! And he did it with no taxpayers' cash.

No wonder those in charge hate him.

Ah yes, councillors Paula Fletcher and Pam McConnell...it's all very clear now.

ASSHATS!

Perhaps the unemployed should now all picket along the island, including the folks who were so inconveniented by the characteristics of sound travelling over the water..."All for one, and one for themselves."  The islanders are one of the moist self-centered groups of people in T.O. that I know of.  This crap was even going on when I gre up in T.O. in the 70's and 80's.

Cheers,
Duey

Geesh...I think I'm the lone sandal wearing tree-hugger on this site but even I'm fed up with some of the Islander antics. I love the Toronto Islands and visit them often during the summer. If I recall one of the reasons Islanders were allowed to stay was to avoid mass development of the Islands, which I can understand, but enough is enough. Toronto is a thriving, throbbing city, blessed with a busy nightlife not a lakeview cottage where the only sounds are skeeters and waves lapping at the shore. 50 years ago the Islands were like that but this isn't 1956 anymore. Drive everything out of the core and it ends up like Mississauga!
