No, they claim not to… Obviously though there’s still an economic case to be made for our oil as cheaper inputs. But if they desire to vassalize us, that interest is served by maintaining dominance in our export market, and trying to keep the WTI/WCS differential up.
So on 1 hand they are importing from us 4+m bpd of our oil - at below market prices - on the other hand this is occuring.

U.S. crude oil exports surge to record as tankers flock to Gulf Coast during Iran war

  • U.S. crude oil exports surged to a record 5.2 million barrels per day in April, according to data from commodities data firm Kpler.
  • Exports are surging as buyers in Asia and elsewhere seek U.S. crude oil as an alternative to Middle East supplies lost due to the Iran war.
  • Corpus Christi, Texas, one of the largest oil export terminals in the world, had the busiest first quarter in its history.

The Port of Corpus Christi has never been busier as tankers from around the world flock to the U.S. Gulf Coast to load up on crude oil during the Iran war.
U.S. oil exports have jumped to 5.2 million barrels per day (bpd) in April, a more than 30% increase over the 3.9 million bpd exported in February before the war, according to data from Kpler.
Ship traffic in Corpus Christi rose to more than 240 vessels in March compared to the 200 the port normally sees in a month, the CEO said.

Canadians need to be told this on a daily basis until its drilled into their heads - we do NOT need another pipeline down to the US, we need pipelines to the coasts so that we have the ability to send our oil to around the world at a HIGHER price than what we are getting today. That new pipeline that Trump just signed off on - bollocks, by doing this we will allow the US to increase their exports even higher and make even more money as a result all while shielding the US consumer from paying fair market prices.

And that is why we need at least another 1.5m bpd pipeline to the sea and another 2+ LNG facilities to the sea.

You have to wonder what it would take to get Quebec on board with a pipeline through Quebec.

Tim Houston wants to bring in fracking out here... Lots of stuff offshore too!

Why not just work around Que ?

The short route is through BC - maybe it's "longer" because of the terrain, but I'm inclined to doubt that; no-one would be re-experiencing building the CPR with 1880s tech - and there are big markets in Asia.

The tolerance so far for how badly ideologues have screwed up land management in BC is impressive, but it has to end.

I have begun to wonder whether Eby punted 6 months on the "critical legal issues" in order to allow time for his government to fall and for another to be elected to deal with the problem so that the NDP can sit on the sidelines and criticize volubly.

I'm sure they're just hanging on so they can dish out favours to enough of the party faithful to guarantee their employment during their upcoming 20 year sojourn in the political wilderness ;)

B.C.’s government sector grew by 54.0% since 2015/16, vastly outpacing private sector job growth and population growth

  • Several recent studies highlighted significant growth in British Columbia’s public sector. This bulletin adds to the existing literature focusing on the number of full-time equivalents (FTEs), providing context for the fiscal implications of such growth and potential reductions.
  • FTE growth in ministry and special offices (37.8%) significantly surpassed population growth (17.2%) and private sector job growth (10.7%) from 2016/17 to 2025/26, increasing by 10,560 over the period.

They aren't importing ours below market; they pay market price for what we're selling. WCS isn't exactly interchangeable with WTI or Brent; different chemistry, different (more) refining needs, and refineries are built specifically for that type of oil. Because there are fewer buyers and fewer export options for our oil, it's less of a seller's market and so there's a discount. Expanding our export options so more could go to and be refined in Asia would likely narrow the spread. The differential is also impacted by pipeline capacity.

We can bring our oil closer to the market spot price of other oils by making it easier for customers to buy. So, pipelines to ports. There was a distinct shrinking of the WVCS/WTI price differential when Transmountain Expansion started running.
