China is building half of the world’s new nuclear power despite inland plants pause​


China has expanded its nuclear power capacity at the fastest rate of any country in the 21st century, according to new data from Global Energy Monitor. Despite a moratorium on inland nuclear plants imposed after the Fukushima disaster, China is building enough capacity to overtake France within the next few years and hold the world’s second-largest nuclear fleet. Nearly half of the world’s nuclear power under construction is located in China. Its government has promoted nuclear power to shore up baseload capacity in the electricity sector and to help achieve its targets for carbon peaking before 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. But not all of the proposed buildout may come to fruition. Less than one-third of China’s planned nuclear capacity has begun construction, and China already has more cancelled nuclear capacity than any other country as a result of its pivot away from inland nuclear plants. By contrast, China has about two-thirds of the world’s utility-scale solar and wind power under construction, which, along with promising advancements in utility-scale battery technology, may reduce the need for continued additions of nuclear power.

Atikamekw Nation

The Atikamekw First Nation is an Indigenous people numbering about 7,000 citizens in north-central Quebec, Canada. Their ancestral homeland is known as Nitaskinan ("Our Land"), located in the upper Saint-Maurice River valley. They live primarily in three core communities: Manawan, Wemotaci, and Opitciwan (Obedjiwan).

Marinvest Energy is a Norwegian project development company proposing the Kino Aski LNG megaproject in Canada. The initiative aims to transport natural gas extracted via hydraulic fracturing in Western Canada through a new ~1,000 km pipeline to a liquefaction plant and export terminal in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, for shipment to Europe.

1000 km is roughly the distance from the Ontario border, around Kapukasing and Temiscaming, across Atikamekw land in Quebec to Baie Comeau.

In total, N.L. Hydro says Newfoundland and Labrador will get about 760 MW more power with this agreement — 2,350 MW versus 1,990 MW agreed in the 2024 MOU. If the wind project is completed, that amount could increase up to 2,750 MW.

Hydro-Quebec gets access to up to 6,915 MW, or up to 8,515 MW if the wind project is completed.

N.L. Hydro says Hydro-Quebec will pay 1.8 cents per kilowatt hour next year — up from the current 0.2 cents — and that price will go up 14 per cent per year, reaching 11.5 cents in 2041.

N.L. Hydro also says N.L. can choose whether or not it wants to use or sell its allotted power from the Churchill Falls base plant.

This extra power will also help develop Labrador’s mining industry.

A hereditary chief and several environmental groups argue province was wrong to extend old approval for long-delayed pipeline


After a five-year extension to an environmental approval certificate was granted in 2019, the northern B.C. pipeline had to be “substantially started” — meaning moving beyond planning into actual development, such as land clearing — by November 2024. The province announced in June 2025 the pipeline had met that threshold.

If the Nisga’a Nation-backed $12-billion pipeline project had lost its environmental certificate, it would have had to undertake a completely new environmental review.

That would have been a major obstacle for the $10-billion Ksi Lisims LNG project, a floating liquefied natural gas facility the pipeline is to supply. The proposed LNG project located in a remote area north of Prince Rupert will super cool gas delivered from northeastern B.C. for transport on ships to Asian markets. It was added to Canada’s major projects fast-track list last November.
