Canadian pipelines are essentially running at capacity, and the WCS/WTI spread has opened up again. More highlighting of the need to hasten better access to tidewater; we’re leaving dollars on the table with every barrel we can’t offer to other customers out of our own export terminals.

Separatist, environment, and some First Nation groups speak out against new Alberta-B.C. pipeline

'This is not a cake walk. This is not a ‘gimme,'' B.C. Grand Chief Stewart Phillip said of the planned Pacific Link pipeline

Alberta separatists, some First Nations, and environmental groups are among those speaking out against the planned Pacific Link pipeline between Alberta and B.C. that was announced as a project of national interest on Thursday.

The designation means the project will be fast-tracked through Ottawa’s major projects office and could see construction begin as soon as next September.

In announcing the designation, Premier Danielle Smith hailed the pipeline as proof that Alberta can get a good deal from the federal government, while Prime Minister Mark Carney cited the potential economic benefits, stating, “the Canadian taxpayer is going to make a lot of money off this pipeline.”

Keith Wilson, co-leader of the separatist group Let Alberta Decide, posted to social media questioning the timing of the announcement so near the Oct. 19 referendum as well as the potential public financial burden of the project.

“That timing deserves scrutiny. It’s Ottawa playing politics to get Albertans to forget about decades of mistreatment and how Canada does not work for Alberta,” he said, later adding he hoped the pipeline ultimately gets built but also noted its lack of a majority private proponent.

“Taxpayers are now on the hook for the overwhelming majority of the initial ownership interest, while major questions remain about final financing, new B.C. tolls on Alberta oil, shipper commitments and the ultimate cost.”
