Police need little key fobs so when they jump out of their cars they can lock the doors behind them.

Our cars do have a fob so the door can be locked. It also has a "secure idle" button so you can remove the keys on your way out the door and any attempt to put the car in motion will kill the engine (foot on pedal/try to put in gear).

Ideally not only do you put the car in secure idle, but you lock it as well. On more than one occasion I've been to spicy calls (man with knife threatening people was the base call here, and that would be spicy for most people) where most members under stress don't do that.

I won't comment further on the tactics, as this one will be absolutely picked apart by the IIO-BC and a fulsome report written about why charges are or are not being laid. Just give them, you know, two years...

You're a better man than me. Having seen enough videos of this I'm certain my fear of having the car stolen would supersede that heroic life saving stuff

Seemed to be a fair difference in body language between some of the attending officers. It will be interesting to (eventually) read that report, I'm curious how the cruiser blocking in the one buddy jumped into will play out in any finding.

Oh I'm with you, short of having somebody attack me on my way out of the car I'm locking it at a minimum. I carry my spare keys on me so if I don't have time to secure idle it I can at least lock with the spare fob. Also helps avoid having to call the local tow yard for a keys in car oopsie when out and about doing routine things.

There's a number of things in the front seat of my car that I don't want growing legs, so I drilled getting out of my car quickly until I could do it both grabbing my C8 and leaving it behind smoothly and without an extra thought. Made the recruits I coached do the same.
