Hi All;

I am new to the forum, but not to the Military. We have been a military family for 16 years. We currently live in Edmonton and just found out we are posted out to Cyprus. We will be the lone Canadians there. Does anyone have any tips or advice for a move like this? School is not an issue since my son distance educates anyways. He will stay with the Alberta school system while we are in Cyprus.

Congratulations on your posting. I did three UN tours on the island between '75 and '92 and enjoyed myself during the whole time. The island is rich in history and is a stepping stone to the Eastern Mediterranean area: Syria, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Greece and Turkey are just a short jump away.

As for the move, your relocation people should be able to help you throughout the process. They were very good when I was posted to Italy in '99 and then back again in "03. I imagine that the posting will be in the summer which could be a problem. In this part of the world most people take their vacations during July and August which could cause delays in getting phones, etc hooked-up.  When I was posted to Italy I actually had my posting deferred until Sept for this very same reason.

The best thing to do is get in contact with the Canadian who is posted there now and he/she can probably fill you in on any relevant details.

Read up on the history of the island, especially the recent events since independence from Britain. Keep an open mind once you arrive on the island as the Greek-Turkish divide is still a very big issue, especially to the Greek-Cypriots. Some people will go to great lengths to vilify the other side so the best bet is to just stay neutral and keep your opinions to yourself.

All-in-all you should have a very good time and I wish you all the best.

You will enjoy it there.  Not only is Cyprus rich in recent history, but also in ancient history.  Birthplace of Aphrodite, part of "Othello" was either in Cyprus or involved some dude from Cyprus, and I think it's even mentioned in the Bible.  Lots to do there, and the weather will be "tough" to handle (once you return to Canada, that is)

Enjoy your posting!

I guess expected from a sailor to an extent, but the cheapest booze to purchase is Redbull & Vodka. hehehe

Bring some sunscreen, definately need it. Very lucky indeed, make the most of it!

Cyprus is a great posting, basically a giant extended vacation.  I'm not sure where you will be housed, but if it's on base the housing as I remember it was a bit on the older side but reasonably clean.  Watch out for those marble floors!  My brother slipped on one of them and smashed his arm to bits.  As a reward he got a helicopter ride down to the british base in Larnaca.
Also, you will have to be very careful about keeping foodstuffs sealed as ants can be a bit of a problem there.  The weather is very hot and dry with a fair amount of dust.  With a car, it's possibly to hit the beaches every weekend.  There are loads of great places to eat and the Turkish was very cheap compared to the Greek side, not sure if this is still so.
I am not sure how it works now, there were a lot of Canadians(the troops were housed in a hotel right smack in the neutral zone, with some of the biggest honking cockroaches I have ever seen for company  :-\ ) there when I was there, I guess about 20 years ago.  I suppose someone finally figured out what a fun place it was and reduced the Canadian presence, congratulations on getting one of the best postings I can think of!
Southern Cyprus (Aya Napa and other places) is a very popular place for the Euro-trash tourist (ie. drunken club-going types) during summer, so you may want to restrict your activities to the Northern side during then.  There is loads of touring to do, plenty of excellent Roman ruins, and even just snorkelling I would find loads of pottery and other goodies.  If you get bored of the island, there are plenty of places in Europe within easy reach.  I recall a few of the more crazed folks windsurfing from Cyprus to Turkey, the shores of which could apparently be seen on a fine day (urban legend perhaps, I don't remember ever seeing it).
