OK, OK, so he was only my Col-in-Chief for 8 years...
Here's my only Prince Charles story. Edinburgh... 1982... public duties battalion. I was duty officer at Hollyrood Palace/ Edinburgh Castle. One of the jobs of the duty officer is to have dinner with any Royal Family member if they're in residence at Hollyrood. Charles was there, so I was supposed to go have dinner with him, but managed to escape due to another 'pressing' commitment elsewhere. My replacement - another subaltern who shall remain nameless - went down for dinner with him wearing No. 2 service dress (equivalent of DEU) when he should have worn No. 1 dress blues. He sits next to Charles who asks him "I thought you were supposed to be wearing No. 1 dress?", to which the subaltern replies "We only wear that on special occasions, Sir".
We had an Adjutant with a sense of humour who like to dole out extras in bunches of 10, so the subbie in question got 20 extras - to be served on weekends - wearing No. 1 Dress.
