Hi, I was wondering if any one could give me any information about snipers because I have to do a project (a career kiosk) for an english class and wanted to do it about snipers. Any information recieved would be an enormous help and much apreciated. Thank you for your time and help. :)

It might help to post what you know about the subject so far so people can correct you or give you more info.

You may also want to search the Forum on "sniper" to see what has previously been discussed.

Mike

Thank you guys very much for your help. As to posting what I already know about snipers... well it suffices to say that I know barely anything so any information would be of great valour. Thank you once again.

2002 International Sniper Competition

There‘s not much info on this site, but there are plenty of pretty pictures!! check out the one called "Canadian Spotter Prone" and pictures with similar titles.

Its pretty hard to find pics of Canadian snipers on the net. Those guys are all about not being seen.

look up your nearest base or even NDHQ in ottawa and look for public affairs. Give them a call (Im sure theyd be happy to talk to anyone who is not a reporter) and ask them to send you anything they can.. Im sure they‘ll give you some help, you may even get a video or something of that sort..

Also look at the www.recruiting.forces.ca site under "Infantry Soldier" Regular Force Career Profile and it should give you the basics of the training for those who become snipers...

I followed the link Fusaki provided to the 2002 International Sniper Competition, and while there are some great shots of Canadian snipers doing their thing, one of them is using some model of C7/M16 I‘ve never seen a Canadian soldier using.

Check it out here.

It looks like a flat-top C7A1 or M16A2 with a free-floated heavy barrel and an aluminum forestock. It‘s painted a sexy desert tan and has a bipod. :sniper:

The caption -- and the boonie hat -- says the shooter‘s Canadian, but this rifle? What gives? Anyone with some inside info?

Compare this:
Canadian Spotter prone
to this:
Diemaco C7CT

I know its not really my place to say this, but here I go anyways:

company girl, you‘re asking about a subject that civillians (like myself) can only guess about and people who‘re really "in the know" won‘t talk much about. If you‘re looking for info about snipers in general, I‘d suggest checking out some American resources. They‘re more inclined to publish this sort of stuff.

A little deductive sleuthing would tell us that those Canadian "Snipers" are using non-Canadian kit. I would hazard a guess that this shoot was taking place somewhere in the US or another Allied nation. Key clue here is the magazine that is clearly on that weapon. 20 rd magazines are not CF issue, more likely US.
But who knows, I‘m only a Pilot with some long-ago links to LFC.

my guess being that you never see any eyes is that they might be JTF because from what ive heard (rumors most likely) they can use most any kit they feel like. and there is another rifle i forget who makes it and i cant find my book but it is a M16 rechamberd to shoot a 7.62x51 round with a hvy free floating barrel and is designed as a sniper spotter rifle but once again this is all guesswork. anyways you see snipers work in pairs one spots one snipes the primary (sniper) uses the main rifle (C3a3 or Tac-50) while the spotter carries typicly some sort of semi auto rifle for defensive situations. well the canadian sniper prone picture could just be him checking the rifle out becuase is isnt about to shoot it the ejection port is closed. and the C7CT doesnt match up that rifle in the pic has a fire selector the CT only has single and in the pic on the site it doesnt show a fire selector/safety so it might just be the site pic but the stock and grip is a bit different as well. It seems to me to be a SR-15 made by knights armament or a AR-10 i believe made my armalite kind of a wierd rifle tho,

The most accurate source of info on snipers in general would have to be the book titled Marine Sniper written about Carlos Hathcock a US Marine sniper who is legendary in the "sniper world".

Story on CDN Snipers

I doubt that the snipers in the pictures are JTF. However, since snipers are still considered elite forces, and practicing unconventional warfare, they‘re still accorded anonymity as stealth is as important in their line of work.

As for the rifle they‘re using, it‘s a Stoner.

Effectively, a flat top M16 chambered in 7.62 by 51, semi auto only, with heavier barrel, reinforced butt, and a few other shiny bits (it was designed as a sniper rifle as opposed to other weapons which were modified for snipers). It looks like they‘ve added some form of kite sight or other optic device to the top, which is not uncommon. The whole thing weighs over 10 pounds, unloaded, with no optics.

And I also doubt it‘s that Diemaco rifle either because:

1. 5.56 is a VERY poor ammo for sniping
2. 600m just isn‘t enough range

Most armies use 7.62 or 50 cal. The Canadian sniper who beat the record was using 50 cal... I think in a Barrett

Can‘t be JTF, his hair is too short and he looks like he shaved that morning.

Thank you guys so much, you have helped me immensely. You can‘t even imagine how much of a help you all were. Any other information would still be much appreciated as I can use as much as you want to give me. I have a friend who is a sniper but he had to go get trained and such... but he was supposed to answer some questions for me and was very happy to.. but didn‘t get around to it in time I guess. thank you SOOOO much :) :cdn:

company girl, you may want to post your enquiries on my forum at http://www.canadiansoldiers.com - the link to the forum is in the left hand frame. We had some good sniper talk there about a year ago. A few of the participants are still kicking around.

I understand that the Canadian Forces sniper course is one of the toughest a Canadian infantryman can take - this is not from personal experience but what I have heard. They teach a lot about camouflage and concealment, naturally, in addition to shooting.

Historically, snipers operated throughout the 20th Century and played a fairly substantial role, in WW I and Korea especially, where the battle lines were static much of the time. In WW II, snipers and scouts were grouped together in special platoons, one per battalion; not sure if their training was different in WW II because of that or not, but because of the fluid nature of the fighting in Holland and Germany (and to a degree earlier in Italy and Sicily), I‘m not sure if snipers were as effective or important as having trained scouts.

There is a book on Canadian snipers coming out by Service Publications soon called "Without Warning", which I think will focus primarily on equipment rather than training. http://www.servicepub.com

The dude in the pic isn‘t JTF, and the rifle that he is using isn‘t a Stoner (sorry medic), it‘s a M16/AR15 variant. It still looks small but it probably has a 7.62 upper receiver. The site isn‘t a Kite, just the usual sniper type with an extended glare shield on the end.

I dont think it was the M82A1 Barret

I believe they used the Canadian .50cal Sniper rifle(made from a company in Pheonix, Arizona, USA)
McMillian TAC .50

DnA - that photo of the Tac-50 is actually located on the Simon Fraser University server, I am curious which page you got it from? I‘d like to use it on my own site, but I want to contact the copyright holder first to get permission. Can you help out?

TIA
