Proxy bombs. When you really don't have the guts to do it yourself......

The "proxy bomb" refers to the vehicle-borne delivery of an explosive with the distinct feature that the driver has been coerced into participating. In some cases, the coerced driver of the bomb has time to escape before it detonates, often by remote control operated by an accompanying terrorist unit. In other cases, however, the coerced drivers are blown up as part of the operation. As we have noted, the proxy bomb is perhaps most often associated with Irish Republican terrorism in Northern Ireland, but the tactic has since spread.

D and B may remember this blast from the past.

20 years ago today the IRA detonated a 3300 pound lorry bomb in central Manchester.

It was the most powerful device detonated on UK soil since WWII.

From this year in New York City,

Cops clear part of Times Square after report of suspicious truck,

I imagine Toronto Police will be taking similar precautions for Pride 2016.

Pity there aren't more own goals prior to delivery...we got a double my first night in Camp Julien after we drove in and started to set the place up.  Hug bang and flash from the Dharluman Palace - Germans thought a bad guy had an oopee after a cursory inspection in the dark...next day, more body parts than one would expect on a non-mutant humanoid, so was officially declared a double in our favour.

There was much rejoicing...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enSYlCEz5VI

When I was outside the wire there was on several occasions a whump in the night that I was told was the sound of a premature martyrification by some dickhead.

It's OK though, they've promised to apologize if the British do

Regrettably the self driving cars and trucks will enhance this threat. Automated tracing will be an essential security requirement and some sort of screening facility for explosives may also be required in a network. Governments would be wise to consider this situation now while autonomous transport is in the development stage.

No, not really.

With a self-driving car or truck, the terrorist doesn't get to check off the box marked "Martyrdom" on his P.E.R.; "Leading Chage", sure, but not "Martyrdom" - so no virgins.

How times have changed.

"The city's deadliest car bombing occurred in 1920, when 38 people were killed and 400 wounded by an Italian anarchist who filled a horse-drawn carriage with explosives and parked it in the city's Financial District."

Yep! Horse-drawn carriages pulled by horses that knew where they were going: The original self-driving vehicle  [:D

Very true.  I remember my parents telling me about when the local milkman in Montreal first switched to trucks from horses.  The delivery was much slower because the horses knew where the next house on the route was and would be waiting there for the milkman already while he was delivering the bottles to the first house!

My Grandfathered delivered ice by wagon, a story he told my Mom: Apparently when they switched from driving on the left to the right, the older horses refused to walk on the "wrong side of the road".
