Someone I know recently did the CFAT with a group whose files were all received after all naval trades closed. They were told that their files were deemed "inactive" because of that and they could reapply later.
This someone did very well on the CFAT, has excellent grades, is a mature individual and (acting upon the advice of the first recruiter this person spoke to) already has a seat at an approved SEP college for January.
The new folks at the recruitment centre explained that this is the process once trades close, and told this person to call back in December to see if anything opened up.
I'm skeptical and quite concerned. After following this site for a few months, it's my understanding that this is a long process and without the medical and the interview, etc., there's no way on earth this person will get a call just weeks before the program starts, saying "OK, come on in."
This person would like to go back to the recruitment centre to talk about reactivating the file if at all possible, but is unsure how to approach it without appearing pushy and disrespectful.
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

It's actually very self explanatory. If your trade is closed, they cannot process your file further.

My file was closed two weeks after it was opened. I didn't get to do any of the process. Not only that but I live 9 hours away from any major recruitment center, and from what I understand that puts me at a disadvantage verses someone who lives 3 blocks away from the CFRC's. As such I am no longer expecting (but still hoping!) to be merit listed and called when my trade may or, god forbid, may not open again (April 2011 NDHQ sends out the recruitment quota's for the next fiscal year). Based on what I've learned here I am still hoping to get merit listed/called sometime between April 2011 and April 2012.

Unfortunately when a MOC (military occupation) is closed they cannot process any more applications for that MOC (even if you are 1 step away from being merit listed higher than everyone else). This is due to their budget and wasting time on an application, that they can't even offer a job position upon being merit listed, just isn't affordable and is a waste of resources better spent on applications to MOC's that still have available spaces that need to be filled.

I myself am not part of the CF in any way so I cannot be 100% certain my statements are the case with your friend. I am only repeating what I have learned from various threads I've read on this site; I have been on here every single day since I signed up almost constantly. Researching the CF as much as possible so that during my interview I can impress the interviewer so much that he offers me a job on the spot. (not possible I know but I can hope haha)

Anyway, as for your friend. From what I understand of the SEP program, your friend can still apply for it in his/her second year if they do not make it before this year's deadline. Make sure your friend calls the CFRC you are dealing with on a monthly basis to make sure the Recruiters know they are still interested in the program. That will also earn them points with most recruiters as it shows them that you are dedicated and that you just might be someone worth their time.

My file was closed after 14 months and I live 20 minutes by bus from CFRC.
But I passed security check .I  don't understund why they can not keep file open till next year?

Thanks for all the help. It's good to know this person isn't alone and wasn't being fed a line.
As for going to college now, the chances are becoming pretty slim that this person will find a job that allows such flexible hours and the income to pay family bills while going to school. That being said, this person is still very much interested in pursuing the navy as a career.
Good luck to the rest who are also trying to get back into the process.

Remember why you wait for your trade to be reopened you can do things to make yourself a more viable recruit. Go back to school if you can, take French (or English), and use the opportunity to get in better shape so you can pass BMQ with a less chance for injury.

I don't get why everyone seems to think that joining the CF is like applying for EI.  Applying to join the CF is just the same as applying for a job anywhere else.  If there are openings, and you meet the criteria to be hired, then you will be looked at with all the other candidates who may be applying for the same positions.  Once those positions are filled, there are no more jobs to be offered.  The CF is also not a place where one can on a whim apply to get a free education.  Again, if there are openings, and you meet the criteria and can beat out all the other applicants for one of the positions at a CF sponsored Course, then you are hired.  If there are no positions, then you are not hired.  The CF is not a substitute for Welfare, as some of you seem to think.

Wow. That was... interesting.

I simply wanted to ensure that this person wasn't being fed a line because, as I previously stated, the application process takes a long time and I hoped that this person didn't have misplaced hopes for a January start.

This person is a mature, hardworking but underemployed person who, after meeting with recruiters, undergoing career counselling, speaking with those in the military and (being a very family-oriented person) researching available support for children of military members, has decided to go for it.

This site has been a valuable resource, and as I'd hate to see one negative experience keep the person I know from pursuing a dream, I will keep this one to myself.

Thank you all for your help. Best of luck to the rest in (and just outside) the process.

The thing that has me concerned is if they are closing fully completed file (i myself have finished every aspect of the application process) and telling those applicants to try again next year, will it not be a neverending cycle?

I applied at that end of march 2010, completed all the steps by the end of july, and by then everything was closed. If i am required to close my application and start over again next april, wont the same thing happen, only faster this time? By april 2011 we will have all the applicants that didnt make it before the cutoff in 2010, as well as the regular influx of interested people that comes with each year. Once we miss the cutoff dates in 2011 due to the trades closing faster than we can be processed, than those numbers of people applying will be that much more greater come 2012.

I fully understand the reasoning of not recruiting people when you dont have enough course slots to push them through, my disagreement comes from closing files that the CFRC has already fully completed instead of carrying the files over till the next april.

In short, i hope somethig changes within the recruiting system that prevents the current rat race at april followed by 11 months of sitting on closed files.
