I have some pictures from my DP1 in the winter of last year (we were all given a course CD with pictures and videos). If their face can be seen in a picture can I post it or is that invading their privacy? ANy guidlines for this? Sorry to be a bother, I just thought it be better safew then sorry.
P.S. Please don't give me the politicaly correct answer...the army.ca one will do just fine, thanks.

Cheers

Lots of questions could be asked of you.  First, did any of them sign a Release to have their photos published?  Was the photographer a professional?  Are these photos and CD done professionally and is it copyrighted?

generally, I am agin' any faces being seen on-line.

I am dead-set against it without the express permission of the person in question.

But, I don't know if there's any hard and fast rule about it. Unless anything in the pics can violate OPSEC. (With it being a DP1, that's not too likely.)

Rule of thumb for professional photographers, recognizable face = release form.

Rule of thumb for professional photographers, recognizable face = well know Public Figure.

Ok so a picture of us in an ORV would be alright if you can't see anybody's faces?
Is it the same with videos because I have one of us firing the Carl G that I would like to post. Its all a lot of good stuff to put in a recruiting album or something.

The legal answer is a bit more complicated, you can Google it. Basically it doesn't matter if someone's face is in a picture without consent, unless they are the center of attention of the picture. Example, someone standing on a podium with a bunch of other people beside him. It's alright to publish a picture without their consent, assuming consent of the person on the podium or stage.

How does publishing link up to posting on an Internet forum? I have no idea, because it's not for profit. I'd say it's fine, legally speaking. I don't know the army.ca answer.  ;)

Yeah, I'd say that'd be alright

same-same video as still photo. I know there are pics/videos on here that show faces with accompanying names. I don't like it, but I tend towards the paranoid at times.

Good on you for seeking clarification, though! I don't think you have any photos or videos that would violate OPSEC. I do suggest you look at your stuff with an eye towards PERSEC, though. Just ask yourself if the person in that video/picture would WANT their face or name splashed all over the Internet, because as soon as you put it up on here, it's going to get put upon several other websites, and you won't have any control over it at that point.

You go with your own common sense, and the advice on here.

p.s. It certainly wasn't a stupid question. Well done.
