A police officer has been killed in the line of duty in Kimmirut, a small community in Nunavut, the RCMP has confirmed.

A news release from the Mounties said police would be releasing more details at 11 a.m. ET in Ottawa.

The officer's name has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Kimmirut, a community on Baffin Island, is formerly known as Lake Harbour. According to the community's website, it has a population of about 425 people, 91 per cent of whom are Inuit.

The site describes Kimmirut as a community known for its "warm, friendly people and traditional indigenous Inuit culture and way of life."

RIP Constable Scott.
At the going down of the sun
and in the morn,
We will remember them!

CHIMO!

Travelled to Lake Harbour many times in the early 80s for work.
A nice little community... out in the middle of nowhere.  The town was dry - even back then... so, to have an incident with impaired driving, impaired jugement AND firearms is a crying shame.

November 6, 2007
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the death of Constable Douglas Scott of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP):

“I wish to pay tribute to Constable Doug Scott, who died tragically in the line of duty in Kimmirut, Nunavut.

Constable Scott was in the early days of his career as an RCMP officer with strong ideals and a commitment to help his fellow Canadians. He tragically lost his life while protecting the people of his community and will be remembered for his courage, bravery and dedication.

On behalf of Canadians, I extend my sincere sympathy to the family, friends and fellow colleagues of Constable Scott. We are forever grateful that young men and women like Constable Scott continue to respond to the call of duty often working under extreme circumstances, and in conditions of great danger.

Condolences to colleagues, family and friends.....
