GO!! For shame!! Isn't the idea of someone from out west, using SYNTHETIC oil, some sort of sacrelige? ;D Better not say that to loud out there. They'll tar and feather you and banish you to Ontario! ;)

Well, yes, in a way, but you can quickly counter all comers by saying "did'nt I see you test driving a Hyundai Elantra yesterday?" accusing them of being a Liberal.

As my (union Ironworker) neighbor told me, the real sacrilige is driving a truck small enough to only have one battery and block heater.  :-[As he says, a real man has 2 batteries, 4 headlights, 6 inches of lift, 8 cylinders, and rolls on a tire at least waist high. ;D

And this is what I get for talking to a friend last night in Victoria and laughing at his weather; Cornwall has a winter storm watch in effect now. Good thing there is really no need for me to have to go outside!  :D

Here today in Sept Iles Que it's sunnny with a slight breeze....GLOBAL WARMIING MY B*TT!...It's -35 & below; schools are closed and the dog is terrified to go outside to relieve himself (could be this morning his turds froze before they hit the ground  ;D ). On the brighter side, at least I have a fire going in the fireplace and not sleeping under canvass dressed up like a yeti taking 15 minutes to find the 'little fellow' to relieve myself, wandering 'what in the name of God's creation am I doing here!)  ;D - anyone exercise in Churchill Manitoba January / February '97?: -40 and below

It's not cold until your car/truck has square tires and you need to start it with the tiger torch.  Hmmphff, bunch of cheechakos.  LOL

Niner, are you from Winnipeg? I had that problem the last few days... also my key would not turn in my ignition last Friday, the whole assembly was frozen solid.

Nope I'm a Sourdough from the Yukon.  Up there, they don't shut the schools down until it hits minus 50.  Until then, it's tiger torches and square tires.

and heat pots under the propane takes on cold mornings (most)

Pfffft! Weaklings!

When I grew up, way up North near the North Pole, it got so cold even our dog sled wouldn't start in the morning! Even the Eskimos stayed in, those days, I tell you. But the schools still stayed open. Official school board policy was: "Schools shall remain open as long as atomic motion is present."

And once, we had to boost Santa's sled on Christmas--he forgot to plug it in. Silly old man.

uh huh, uh huh, as he rapidly backs up, nodding head up and down.....

I'm from as far North as Alberta goes, and our schools don't close until -50 as well. Busses stop running, but the school is always open. Square tires, I'm all too familiar with that as well. Usually one week every winter end Jan-mid Feb we hit that -50 mark. Whoohoo, no school..FINALLY!

Gap, no one uses water... geez it'll freeze.. You use a copper heat band at the top of the tank to heat the liquid back to gas as it exits.  (Propane turns to liquid at minus 43C) LOL http://www.csao.org/UploadFiles/M029/Hazards/Propane.pdf

And Fred, my dogs loved the cold weather, however, they don't tend to do too much moving after it hits minus 70.

Pea, my favourite time was when we finally got a wet/packing snow fall and we'd get a day off school to have a massive snowball fight and snow sculpture marathon.  The rest of the year it would be powder snow...great if you are a kid that has to shovel the driveway...lousy if you want to plant a snowball on an annoying brother's head.

Actually, we used pans of deisel fuel (they look like black pots & scared the hell out of me the first cold morning I saw them happily burning away) heating the propane tanks from underneath to create enough warmth that it will turn to gas and pressurize the lines to the furnaces.

Edited to add: outdoor school recess was only cancelled when windchill was 2350 of higher.  When my kids came back to Winnipeg, they couldn't understand why outdoor school recess's were cancelled higher than 1600

Yeah I've seen that used in Alaska...my mum discovered the boiling point for propane one winter as her propane stove had liquid propane spewing out of it...ick...

Read "State of Fear" by Michael Crichton.  It's a fictional novel, however, the scientific data is real and global warming is not as huge an issue as people seem to think.  Apparently, the earth has gone through many cycles of warming/cooling as proven by factual (researched) data presented in the book.  Also, a good read!!

Maybe it's just me but I seem to be convinced that humanity is living in unsustainable ways that stretch the ecological limits of the planet's ability to support human life. It's not natural, who knows how long the planet will continue to provide. Sooner or later technology won't be able to keep up with requirements and people will not be willing to significantly change their lifestyles. Possibly leading to extreme global warming.

Three winters in Yellowknife taught me to:

Install a canvas belly-tarp under the truck.
Install battery blankets, and a pad heater on the oil pan.
Use full-synthetic oils in the engine, transmission, transfer case, differentials, and especially power-steering (oil lines pop right off when you try and pump red jello through them).
Square tires happen.  Get used to it.
Ford's truck heaters are still the best out there.

One thing I never understood was, when walking anywhere in Yellowknife town, you could freeze to death standing on a street corner waiting for traffic to stop so you could cross the road.  I mean, they're in heated vehicle cabs, and I'm in full penguin dress mode, swivelling my whole body back and forth to look left and right because my field of view with the hood drawn tight is about the same as looking through a toiletpaper tube.  All the while the cars are rolling by leaving a wake of frozen ice exhaust until you decided you'd rather take your chances with the traffic than die of exposure.

Now I live near Calgary and make fun of people who whinge at -15.

Remember the 'Global Cooling' scare in the 70s? Take that sunspot and shove it where it don't shine, Al Gore...

Global Warming Myth Buster
Myth: Global warming will cause more storms and other weather extremes.

Fact: There is no scientific or statistical evidence whatsoever that supports such claims on a global scale.  Regional variations may occur. Growing insurance and  infrastructure repair costs, particularly in coastal areas, are sometimes claimed to  be the result of increasing frequency and severity of storms, whereas in reality  they are a function of increasing population density, escalating development  value, and ever more media reporting.

I forgot this thread was around.  Good place to post the fact that IT SNOWED IN NORTH BAY YESTERDAY  :o  Only good thing about that was the fact that I was far away on the west coast.

1 1/2 ft of new snow at Mt. Washington, near Courtney, last week. Perfect conditions for uphill skiing!
