Regular Force Officer career progression versus Reserve CT to Reg Force progress

I tried to search this topic and found nothing substantial.
A friend and I were discussing and we're at ends with what we think may be right.
context: I'm a Reg F ROTP student being commissionned in May, he's a RESO 2Lt who plans on doing a CT after 2011 when he will be done his studies.
Now then, we're at ends on a simple, and quite frankly, immature subject. He claims he will be a Captain (in the RegF)before I will be due to his seniority at the rank of Lt. However, doesn't one usually take a rank decrease when doing a CT? So assuming he will be a Capt by the time he comes over to the RegF, he would be transferred in as a Lt.
Assuming we both had similar PERs, and seeing that I will be Pha 4 qualified and he will not on the time of his CT wouldn't that also play a role in the matter?

If anyone care to shed some light, or some personnal experience it would be much appreciated.


edit: I joined the PRes in Jan 2007 and CT'd in May of the same year. He joined in winter/spring 2008.

Reality is there are too many possibilities in there to give an accurate answer - I think the only way this will be resolved is when/if one of you gets to the rank of Capt. It may even happen that you will be a Capt before he gets his foot in the door the way enrolments are going these days.

The norm in the past was to drop down in rank level but not always and I think there are more cases of keeping the rank due to experience.

I suggest you simply make a friendly wager and put your all into winning it.

It also depends on your trade and your element.  For example, a naval reserve MARS or Int Officer can CT to the reg force and keep their rank provided they were a Lt(N) or below.  For these two trades, the training is identical to the reg force all the way through phase 4, so in effect all the qualifications carry over.

I dont think this was the case for army officers before, but I beleive that is starting to change slowly but surely.

Another thing to consider.  The reserves require 3 years time in rank of Lt to become a Capt.  Whereas the reg force requires 2 years time in rank of a Lt to become a Capt, but you are also delayed commission until your degree is complete whereas he is not.

If a Reserve Lt needs at least 3 years time in to become a Capt, does that mean a Reserve 2Lt needs at least 2 years (or more) time in to become a Lt?

For some reason I think the CF would have seen through the loophole and changed things by now if hte case were that if two people were on equal playing fields (let's say both with a high school diploma and no post-secondary education), one could become a Reg Force O quicker by going through the Reserves than if he went through the Reg Force. Purely an assumption which will probably get me a boot in the rear by the next poster.

For the reserves there is no time in requirement to get 2Lt.  If you are a reserve DEO then you get 2Lt upon completion of BOMQ.  If you are still working on your degree you get 2Lt upon completion of phase 3 and then you get Lt upon completion of phase 4, thats how it is in the navy anyway except were talking about ASlt and SLt respectively.
