I was just wondering if anyone could answer my question. I go to a Catholic school, but I am a Jew. I usually wear a baseball cap in equivalent to my kippah to school and around , and I do take it off at school. What I was wondering is if I was allowed to wear my kippah all day without any problems ,or would I need to take it off? I have been meaning to ask the chaplain, but he seems to be a busy man these days. Any input would be appreciated.

Regards,

It would be completely up to the dress code of your school, as these things do vary from school to school even within the same district sometimes. The Chaplain would be the best person to speak too, just make an appointment with him and express your concerns.

I went to Catholic school as well and it was not a problem for the Jewish students there.  Its part of your religion to wear it in respect to God right?  So you should be permitted to wear it.

All this PCBS, you know what religion you are, and I know what I am, but I don't need to advertise it. Why not just go to school, have fun ( in time you'll look back as they are truly the best and most fun yerars of our lives overall), and put the religious stuff on the back burner and enjoy a carefree school life. I don't think anyone will hold it against you, not even God.

I would be more concerned about my faded favourite 501's and a cool t-shirt then a RC cricifix around my neck.

Cheers,

Wes

Wes, I don't know if you went to a Catholic school but, they can be pretty anal about stuff like this ::).  Which I found entirely annoying try being one of only about 20 people in a school of 1000 who dose NOT believe in God.  :D

I did, both elementry and RC high schools in Regina. Paid RC taxes once I bought a house. However here in Australia you pay no school taxes. Just land taxes, ha!

That was the 70's when teachers wore suits and ties, you addressed them as 'sir' and we stuck to our faded (but clean) 501s, adidas runners, and favourite  'non' offesnsive t's  ;D

Mass was Wed am from 0830-0930h

EDITed for spelling and again clarity

Lol

Well then, you of all peeps should know about the less than understanding and patient Catholic faculty who run those schools.  The same folk who told me I was going to hell for cheating on my grade 9 Math Exam. :P

Hey think way back for a sec...did you have science right after religion class and as a result sat there thinking about how it was contradicting your last 40 minute class like I did?!

Something about learning the evolution theory...then a bell...then learning about how blasphemous the evolution theory is was very funny to me.

Thanks for the answers. I figured it would be ok, but needed a double check. The science at my school stays away from evolution from what I've done in 9 and 10. It sucks when I'm sure I'm one of the few who are not Christian(any denomination), aethist, or agnostic at my school.

You went to a Catholic school and found it "annoying" to be one of those who didn't believe in God?

Unbelievable.  ::)

20 out of a 1000. That's a big minority. We have around 1300-1400 kids and I think we almost have an equal amount of religious and non-religious people, proboly 60% Christian and other and 40% Aethist,Agnostic or Free Thinkers

Thats what you get for being Jewish and going to a Catholic school. Me, if i was Jewish, i would probably go to a Jewish school instead.

Well, hopefully you've had your question answered. I guess the chaplain would be a start, but I would really bounce it off an administrator, they are the ones with the final say. I don't think we've ever encountered that particular issue in my board. In comparison to S. Ontario, our "uniforms" are pretty laid back. I checked our uniform policy, but there isn't anything about headwear (probably b/c it isn't allowed).

I don't think that that there are any non-Christian students in our system, but I could be wrong (come to think of it, the only Jewish person I "know" from Thunder Bay is Paul Schaffer  ;D).

Hmmm, interesting comment. You are aware that some of us are those "less than understanding and patient faculty?" I would suggest that you not paint us all with the same brush. Now I know that things are a bit different closer to the centre of the universe than it is up here in Siberia the north (I've heard that we're a bit less "hardcore"). However, that doesn't change the fact that Catholic teaching is Catholic teaching. Last time I checked, the Church supports the idea of evolution. How do I know? Well, I taught religion for two years and I've dealt with the issue for seven years while teaching Gr.11 Ancient History.
Anyway, my point is that your personal experience may have not been satisfactory for whatever reason; other people might have had a very different experience.

Sometimes its the only school in the area and thus one is left with the choice of either a) going to the closer catholic school or b) taking a long bus ride. In Ontario, Catholic schools are entirely publicly funded and thus are essentially public schools like your standard secular one. So, if its your neighbourhood school, then you go to it unless you feel like bussing to a school farther away. There are LOTS of students in Catholic schools who are not religious at all. The right to Catholic schools is enshrined in the Constitution, actually, hence why they still exist in our generally secular society.

My remark was actually aimed at his being "annoyed" about being one of the few who didn't believe in God at a religious school, Catholic or otherwise.

That's like going to a mostly black school and being "annoyed" that you're one of the few white people.

Oops! I put "black" and "white".  Call the PC police!!

We get this all the time!
Religion sucks (or is gay, take your pick)! Going to mass sucks! Morning prayer sucks! Uniforms suck!

Well why the hell did you come to a Catholic school? Hello? This is what we do! Either deal with it or pick a public school. Sorry to be blunt, but that's the way it works.

You're asking in the wrong place, this is a military forum. Go ask your school administrators.
