Hello, I am now looking at joining my local reservce unit as an Infantry Officer. I work full time but have nights and weekends free. On avaerge how much time is required each week to join the reserves? Is it one night a week and a couple weekends a month or is it every weekend?

thanks

Why don't you call/visit the Reserve unit you are interested in joining an talking to them about their training schedule.

You won't be on an FTX every weekend though.

In general you're looking at one night per week, one weekend per month. That's a baseline, however, and it varies among units and trades (I'm not infantry). You should check out the Resreve Force page on the CF recruiting website. Also, I agree with Skeletor. Visit your local unit and talk to their recruiter.

As an officer, you will be required to put substantially more time into your unit that 1 night a week, 1 weekend per month. That may be the minimum, but I think you will find the expectations of your unit will be more - Implied if not fully stated anyway...

But of course, you are not going to start off as an officer right off the bat.  You'll start as an O/Cdt and most likely not have much to do with Unit affairs or administration as you will be on some sort of indoctrination and Basic Training first.  Then you will have to also be committed to completing qualification courses that may run 30 to 60, plus or minus, days each summer before you are Commissioned as an officer.  Depending on your timing, on your Unit, and other unknown factors, you may be working a couple of weekends (Fri, Sat, and Sun) per month doing you Basic Training.

No one on this site, unless they are actually in the unit that you join, can tell you precisely what training hours you may have to keep.

looking for some feed back:

applied in may 09 and by mid sept 09 i passed PT and my file was passed on/waiting to be picked up by 41 Brig since res. BMQ was starting after thanksgiving weekend.  As per my file manager, "I should be getting a phone call any time".  Ofcourse, no phone call and after i contacted the office again.. i was told that yeah training started and they might call me to join them for parades.

what does that mean join for parades? without uniform or any sort of training?  Wondering if someone can shed light on this situation.

thanks

The short version is that your regular weekly training night is known as parade night. I'm in a similar spot right now. Training hasn't started yet, but I've been to two parade nights. Not so much as a participant, but as an observer thus far. For me it's been a good way to meet the people I'll be working with, and hopefully it will be the same for you. I've got my kit now, so hopefully I'll be able to participate a bit more, and get a bit of in house training before BMQ starts. You're experience may vary at your unit, but it seems a logical way to treat new folks coming into the unit.

Great feed back! thank you so much... I am very excited to be a part of this and looking forward to step 1 BMQ....

thanks
