Hi,

A few days ago I received a booklet to join the reserves and have been thinking about it for quite some time, however I have some questions:

1. Is it too late to join the reserves this summer? (The date is May 29th)
2. If I go during the summer and meet the minimum number of days I need to attend do I still need to go after the summer?
3. How long is the training and what do I do after that?

Thanks!

1.  You are most likely too late.

2.  It would be preferable if you continued, but you will not be forced to.  However, if that is your plan, you will most likely not be considered, as they are looking for people to continue.  It is a waste of their money to train someone and then have them leave.

3.  It will depend on what Trade you join and what courses and qualifications you will want and require to advance in that Trade.

You can find more by reading some of the following:

Here are some reading references that are core to how Army.ca operates. I strongly recommend you take a moment to read through these to give you a better sense for the environment here. It will help you avoid the common pitfalls which can result in miscommunication and confusion. For those that choose not to read, their actions often lead to warnings being issued or even permanent bans.

To summarize. Welcome to Army.ca, start reading.

I do not plan on leaving the reserve, just not participating during the school days and going back during the summer or other long breaks. Is that allowed?

I don't think you have read enough to understand what the commitment is that one requires to have when joining the Reserves.

Dude,

Chose another path to follow.

Military life is about commitment to yourself and those you train with.

It appears wearing a uniform will interfer in your lifestyle.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

1. It is way too late to join and make it for this summer.
2. You would still attend during the school year but you will not miss any school if you don't have too. The times you show up at your unit would be at night and generally once a week, with some training opportunity on the weekends.
3. Training varies from course to course, and you could end up on a weekend course starting one month and ending 2-3 months later, for a total of about 20-30 days of training.

If you are worried about conflicts and would only show up "every once in a while", consider the Boy Scouts.

I have to second... err, or third the motion of you being way too late. I started in early January and I just got through. Chances are, if you do sign up now, you will be doing the fall/winter basic which is basically one evening a week, and one weekend a month.

ps, read what George Wallace posted, you would not believe how much it comes in handy. If you can't read that, then

RECONMAN,

The answer to your question is NO. Reserves have a minimal commitment of 1 night a week 1 weekend a month. This is the MINIMUM. There are other things that happen through out the year like Brigade level exercises, Base level (if you're near a base), Area level exercises. Your attendance on these exercises are not mandatory however, the training you would receive would be invaluable to your future career progression.

If you cannot commit to the minimal 1 night a week 1 weekend a month training schedule, I would, as a recruiter, recommend against that. This would probably the concurrence of all my other counterparts spread through out the country at every PRes Unit and CFRC. This is not a job for you, if you are not prepared to show up to work.

Remember, this is not a job. This is a lifestyle.

I'm going to start to complain that one day a week is not enough for me! Chances are that'll change when I'm on course. But still, for the time being, I wish I could be at my unit more besides only on parade night.  :rage:

Brett
In referance you wishing more days to work ,you should let you Cof C know you are available to work more days or wknds although i think you're still in school you can still volunteer for wknds .also try and get different quals so you are more employable such as a driver wheeled crse .
The more you go in and work the more your unit will call on you to come in .

I'm just wrapping up my last week of school. I'm on a July 3 bmq so I guess I'll have my share of work considering the fact that July 3rd seems to get closer... and closer.

Anyway, when I get back I'll be sure to let them know I'm open 24/7!
