Restoration Projects

I see some of our topics are bringing up the facts that some are into restoring old Military Pattern Vehicles.  Franko and a few others are restoring a Ferret and Universal Carrier right now and may be tasked to assist in restoring a Centurion Tank to be used as a Monument in the Town of Petawawa.  There is mention of a restoration project that has a running 3/4 ton SMP in another post.

How many projects are on the go out there?

Where are you getting all your parts?  Names of Suppliers?

Where are you getting Technical Manuals?  I know an OPP Constable in the Ottawa area who publishes a Magazine on MPVs, 'Convoy Magazine' and I am sure there are other similar magazines out there of interest too.

So what do we have out there?

The Strathconas have a bunch of vehicles that they restored into runners.
4 Ferrets, a Centurion, a Stuart, 1 or 2 Shermans, a Lynx, a military Harley, 3/4 ton and a 5 ton wrecker. They use the Ferrets to carry the Guidon Party on big parades.

Thanks Nick and Mike.   You can never have too many resources available when you get into a project like this.   The more contacts one can make the easier a project may become a reality.   I hope that this will help some of the guys out there who may be thinking of rebuilding an old Jeep or Bren Gun Carrier or some other more lofty projects.

I have a few contacts from my re-enactments. I was going to buy a bren from TO. a 1000$. But I could not get it shipped out here. I have spyed a few here but at a high price. I have too many projects here. We just recieved the C1. It looks like a Jemseg special. C1 Turret colour/ C2 Hull colour. Mike Mulholland my give me a hand to paint it.
Right now I'm looking for a M38 or a dispatch bike. I received a E mail from a fella that was selling a Stag. A good price at 6000$. But the Bank would not loan me the cash, I guess a 50,000$+ veh after restore didn't interest them. Send some pics of the vehs for us Gagetown folk.  :evil: :tank:

W Bty is still in the K-Lines, but so are parts of 4 AD and the Armoured School

The individual who put it there will have to take care of it himself.

George heres two vehicles that are in the B.C. Military Collectors Club that were on display at the Airshow last weekend.
Both of them run.
Also a site you will rarely see WW2 vehicles in front of a B 17,two jeeps,two Weapons carriers ,a C.P. Sigs Van and Half Track

The Sask D in Moose Jaw have a veh monument park with about 13 pieces of equipment from WW 11 to the present that were at one time used by members of the unit.  Because the historical roots of the unit in Moose Jaw involve both inf and Arty as well as the current recce unit, there are pieces from each.  They have several runners and are currently working on a 67 pattern jeep which has almost been fully restored-I even got a ride in it but believe they are still looking for some superstructure.  They also have a 5 ton wrecker and a WW 11 arty gun truck that are mobile.  Most of the resources came through the unit members but we also had some support from the Saskatchewan Military Museum in Regina.  They have a curator there a Maj Inches retired that is quite good at securing pieces and funding.

On a side note I was out hunting several years ago and saw a Bren Gun carrier being used by a farmer.  I went and talked to him and he was quite pleased to show me how it operated.  I believe there are many such veh on the prairies.

Kieth Inches is a very informative and helpful source.

I should put out a short note to all; especially those who may be Serving in some of the technical trades, as vehicles and equipment are being 'retired' as obsolete to museums, we should also send the technical manuals with them.  How often do we have displays that require repair after sitting for ten or more years and can't find any manuals for repair or maint.?
