Ringing the bell in the Mess

No one actually attempted to drink 27 glasses/bottles! But it kept people happy and cheering (not that the Francos need any more motivation to keep doing that!) and it ensured that at pretty much anytime you could get in line for a free drink.

I guess the next question would be: Hhow did each bellringer limit their commitment at the bar - by $ value or time limit.  If you did not make it through the line 27 times was it due to $, time, APGAR score or bladder size?

Mix of time and bladder size. If you were at the back of the line after a bell rang, chances were the bell would be rung again by the time you got to the fron of the line. People we're drinking a lot, but no one was being rediculous; they cleaned and mopped up the place when they were done too. This was after, of course, the mess staff removed the bell and put in behind the bar to stop it from being rung.

Depends upon the Mess I guess. The Mess that I PMCd had a 50 buck charge for a bell-ring (as per our Constitution) ... unless the Ringer themselves allocated more so that an entire round was bought for the house if it would be over 50 (or less than 50 if the round for all those in the house cost less than that). That all being said, I've seen more than enough occasions for multiple rings to the 50 buck mark which kept the house drinking for quite some time.

Then again, I really loved the ones who drank pop all night ... until the bell was rung and they suddenly developed a taste for a beer or rye or two (and of course, they were also very adept at never ringing the bell themselves).

DO NOT be one of those people --- we all know who they are (and some of us PMCs purposefully and conciously avoided ringing the bell when they were present).  ;)

I went up to Alert from OP Hurricane 99 and went to a party at Vimy House. Prior to going in, I was told of the protocol of ringing the bell as soon as you got in the door and they put ticks on a fridge.

Next I remember a barber chair and green liquor and then waking up.....the next afternoon.

Onboard ship we barely ring the bell, just announce a chit is open and it is to be enjoyed. But I agree with Vern, there are the vultures who wait around for the free stuff mainly a crusty old Chief Storesman.....you know who you are!
