I had a friend that worked as a deck officer on a cruise ship. Very limited interactions with the guests and a heavy work schedule. He enjoyed it and made good money, but it certainly is not a pleasure cruise for the crew.

The RCN for a while had personnel on BC ferries and also CCG ships. Guess what? many left and were hired by the companies. That's the danger.

On all the cruises, when they had meet the crew and officer events I always kept thinking that they must want to anywhere but at these social meet and greets. They were always very social and smiling but my spider sense told me they probably didn’t want to be there.

Zero nautical experience outside of a short ride in a Coast Guard boat followed by a quick jaunt on a zodiac, but there seems to be worse ways to learn how to steer & park BHS (big honkin ships).

In the merchant navy world, and especially in the cruise ship world, you are not getting anywhere near steering and parking the ship unless you are the Captain, Deputy Captain (yeah! That's an actual position/title) or First Officer. Anyone else, forget it for the first 20 years of your career.
