Russia soldier jailed for abuse

The victim, Andrei Sychev, developed gangrene after being told to crouch
A Russian soldier has been sentenced to four years in jail for abusing a conscript soldier so badly that his legs and genitals required amputation.
Sgt Alexander Sivyakov was the main defendant among three soldiers accused of abusing Andrei Sychev, 18.

The case has made headlines in Russia for highlighting army brutality.

The BBC's Moscow correspondent says the incident could return to haunt Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov, who has been tipped for a future presidential bid.

The incident took place at the Chelyabinsk Tank Academy in the Ural Mountains on New Year's Eve 2005, while Sgt Sivyakov's unit went on a drinking spree to celebrate the holiday.

The conscript soldier was tied to a chair and beaten, and made to crouch for so long that the blood flow to his legs was cut off and he developed gangrene.

Nine months after the attack, he remains in hospital.

Sivyakov, was convicted of exceeding his authority and using violence. He always denied any wrongdoing.

The prosecution had demanded a penalty of six years in jail. Pte Sychev's family denounced the punishment - even before it was handed out - as inadequate.

More than 6,000 soldiers were victims of abuse last year, the military has said.

The case sparked an outcry in Russia, with liberal groups using it to demand an end to conscription to the armed forces.

The Kremlin has refused to end the draft, under which all Russian men between 18 and 27 must spend two years in the military.

Russian conscript beaten into coma by officers-RIA

MOSCOW – Two Russian officers who had been drinking have beaten a conscript into a coma, prompting an investigation by the local authorities, media reported on Thursday, citing defence ministry and regional officials.

Russia's Echo Moskvy radio said an officer and warrant officer at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk region of northern Russia knocked conscript Sergei Sinkonen to the ground and then struck him repeatedly in the head with belts.

The station said Sinkonen was not expected to recover.
News agency RIA quoted an unidentified official in the local authority as saying the beating happened on Aug. 14 but that the army unit's commanders did not promptly report it.

Bullying and abuse is commonplace in Russia's military, where recruits serve 18 months and face hazing by older soldiers called 'dedovshchina,' or 'rule of the grandfathers.'

Often, dedovshchina means soldiers are forced to steal or beg and hand over earnings to their tormentors. Some officers have been prosecuted for renting soldiers out as laborers.

But in some cases death or serious injury result. Doctors last year had to amputate an abused soldier's legs and genitals.

That caused deep embarrassment for then Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov, who is widely expected to run to replace President Vladimir Putin in 2008

Uhh..... I have seen some Officers and senior NCOs use their troops as labourers.
Building that little summer retreat out in the woods, near the lake.... possibly using some construction material that was supposed to go into building something military...

Yeah - haven't seen anyone renting out the troops but....
