Brother of dead soldier missing in B.C. Interior

VANCOUVER -- A family still mourning the loss of Master Corporal Colin Bason, a Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan less than three weeks ago, are now frantically searching for his brother, Beric, who has disappeared in the B.C. Interior.

MCpl. Bason, 28, was killed by a roadside bomb July 4, along with five of his fellow soldiers. The funeral for the reservist from the Royal Westminster Regiment was held Wednesday in Langley, B.C.

His 26-year-old brother was last seen early Sunday storming away from the Loon Lake resort, where he had been on a one-week getaway with a friend, police said.

The double blow has been especially devastating for their parents, Ann and Gary, said Katrina Blain, MCpl. Bason's partner and the mother of their five-month-old daughter, Vienna.

"They just lost one son and now they can't find their other one," she said.

Mr. Bason was last seen at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, said Corporal Pete Bes of the Clinton RCMP detachment. Mr. Bason had been partying and drinking, when he got upset and walked away, heading toward the highway, the officer said. When he didn't show up 20 hours later, Mr. Bason's friend called RCMP.

"He's still suffering from [his brother's death] a bit," Cpl. Bes said. "I don't know what was said out there by anybody that caused him to walk away, but who knows."

Cpl. Bes said a man matching Mr. Bason's description - brown hair, about 5 foot 11 inches tall with a thin build - was spotted Sunday afternoon by a local resort owner. He said police do not suspect foul play, but are concerned.

"I'm hoping he's passed out in the bushes and he's wandering around waiting for us to find him," Cpl. Bes said.

"Or the best scenario is that he hitchhiked out of there. With the possible sighting in the afternoon, he may have been picked up. He may be in the Lower Mainland, for all we know."

Cpl. Bes said he hopes Mr. Bason will see media reports and let his family know where he is.

Ms. Blain said the family have been waiting by the phone.

"They're just basically keeping on the phone lines ... and sending pictures of him to the local RCMP and hopefully they'll be able to find him soon," she said.

Mr. Bason was last seen wearing jeans, white running shoes and a jacket, possibly blue.

He weighs between 140 and 160 pounds.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Clinton RCMP.

I hope he is found okay, I'd hate for this family to suffer another tragedy so soon.

CLINTON, B.C. — A search is back on around a popular fishing lake in the B.C. Interior for Beric Bason.
He’s the brother of Canadian soldier Master Cpl. Colin Bason, who was one of six killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan three weeks ago.

Police and search and rescue crews will be looking around the area of Loon Lake near Clinton, B.C. As police follow several leads from possible sightings, a police boat is also being brought in to search the lake.

A Loon Lake resident who claimed he saw Bason Sunday afternoon confirmed it was him after he was shown a recent picture of Bason.

The 26-year-old walked away from a resort near the lake in an intoxicated state early Sunday morning.

I'll be praying for him and his family, that he returns home safely... or that they find him and he is alright.

I am sure he'll turn up, and is hopefully tucked away safe in a cabin, with no TV or radio on, and with a hot blonde, unknowingly and unaware of the publicity he has created.

Lets just hope he turns up soon, he, and his family have had too much trauma as of late.

The family does not need this added concern. I know what they are going through as I went through something similar. My brother went missing when he lost his best friend on a fishing trip. Canoe tipped over, my brother stayed with the canoe while his best friend decided to swim ashore. It was close to 48 hours before my brother was found.  His explanation for his disappearance." just wanted to be alone "

Hope this is the case now.

My prayers are with the family.

Search for reservist's brother called off
Vancouver Sun
Published: Thursday, July 26, 2007
Police and rescue teams have called off the search for Beric Bason, whose brother was killed earlier this month in Afghanistan.

Bason, 26, disappeared early Sunday  around Loon Lake in the Cariboo region after a heavy night of drinking. Since then, two police helicopters, a police boat, police quads, and approximately 30 Search and Rescue personnel from Logan Lake, Kamloops, Barrierre and 100 Mile House  have scoured the area with no luck.

"An extensive and exhaustive search of the area has been completed and there is simply nowhere else to search under the conditions of the area," the RCMP said in a release.
Bason's brother Colin Basin, 28, a reservist from Abbotsford, was killed on July 4 with five other Canadian soldiers when their vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb.

While the active search has ended, the  police investigation has not, the release said.

"There is still the possibility that Beric left the area and we are still hopeful that someone has seen him or picked him up from the area," they said.
