Second Chance as Pilot

Hi,

I had to chance to go to aircrew selection last year for pilot. Unfortunately, I did not pass the flight simulator. However, the officer that worked there said that the ones who did not pass could get their pilots license, reapply as pilot, and could have the chance to return for a second try. He told us which pilot license we had to get, but I do not recall. I called the recruiting office and he said he thought it was the commercial one but he wasn't sure. So my question is whether the required license to get a chance to return to aircrew selection is the private pilot license or the commercial pilot license and if any add-ons are required (night rating for example)?

Thanks in advance,

Have a great day.

If you failed "Aircrew Selection", then you need to achieve a Transport Canada pilot rating or a JAA or FAA equivalent.  Nevertheless, that does not guarantee a second chance.  There doesn't appear to be any distinction between a commercial or private license at this stage of the training.  However, if you fail the PFT (Primary Flying Training) then it does specify the requirement for a "commercial" rating.

I just finished at ASC a couple months back. What was told to us is that you needed to get "one higher" license than whatever you had when you failed. For example, if you did not have a pilot's license than you needed to get your private license, if you had your PPL then you had to get your commercial license, if you have your commercial you would need your air transport license.

DAA has the inside info, as it's kinda his job to know these things  ;)

Definitely did not mean to offend or undermine DAA (or anyone). My apologies!

Just want to go on record that I also got the info from ASC officers and the CFRC that all that was needed is one level up - from no license to PPL or from PPL to CPL. They said RPL didn`t qualify as a level up.

Thanks a lot for the answers everyone!

DAA, can I find this information online, or is this something you know through work?

This info is not available online (DWAN only).  However, I see absolutely no reason why you wouldn't be able to ask your RC this question and obtain further confirmation as to "exactly" what you need to do in order to be considered for another opportunity to do the training.  "Do overs" are at the discretion of your RC, so you have to be able to satisfy them and meet their requirements.

I just returned from aircrew selection last night, and unfortunately I was unsuccessful. As I discussed the outcome with one of the instructors, he told me I need to wait at least 1 year before returning, and as I have no pilot license, I would need to come back with a PPL. So there's the recent info for ya, fresh out the oven.

I don't know the specifics of reapplying though. I think I saw someone on this forum who has done aircrew selection twice, so I'll be looking to check with him.

Good luck.
