There seems to be a great deal of discussion regarding both the technology as well as the deployment tactics for armoured reserve units.  It's been a great place for me to gain some insight into the changes and challenges up ahead for the newly indoctrinated recce units.  Doing a little research, I came across some tactics for deployment of CF recce squadrons in other roles- specifically  guard, escort, and rear-area security duties.  It was made pretty clear that a troop would need support from armour/infantry for these roles- what opinion does this forum have on these secondary duties given where reserve recce units are headed in terms of tactics, equipment, and training?

The root of my question stems from the recent discussions of mounted/dismounted patrols as well as the possibility of using ATV's and un-armoured vehicles to perform these tasks.  Perhaps I'm being one-dimensional in believing a squadron can only be trained on and equipped with one type of vehicle and that the answer to this question would be to simply equip a troop performing the task with the correct platform.  Regardless, I look forward to your responses.

Thanks!

All of those tasks and more are all part of the standard Armoured Recce role. We do all sorts of things besides Advance to Contact, Screen Ops and Withdrawl in Contact. Look in the BTS for Armour and anything you didn't do in Cougars will be your Recce stuff. Convoy, VIP escort, LZ security, etc. We do mounted and dismounted stuff. RAS tasks are part and parcel of the Recce doctrine. Most times we do it as a Tp and by ourselves. Not as a Sqn. One of the small joys of being Recce is the relative autonomy from the rest of the Sqn operating at Troop\ Ptl level. You'll find Recce much more interesting than waiting to run up to a staked out position. Just take it in little bites and you'll find it coming along fine. Don't try wrap your head around the whole thing at once. There's too many little details. Sit back, learn and enjoy. ;D

Not saying you can't or don't work at Sqn level. We do. Just often times it's Tp or Ptl tasks.

Recce has 15 Tasks, For a Recce Sqn no task is sec tasks. Not like a Tank Sqn. The new TTps are direct and forward. I wish I could upload them. But at 500+ pages.

I cannot get them to load. But the last ones were out of date. Due they listed a true Recce Sqn. It didnot take into account for a Res Recce and Reg force. This is also broken down into Regt/BG/Bde Recce Sqns. The TTPs cover the differance between them. Regt Recce will have different tasks, ie secure/marking LDs, security for RHQ,etc. A Bde Sqn would not secure a LD for a BG. It would not have the time. In a screen RR does not have the time to setup.
Recce is not Armour set in it's way. On CC course braking a Tanker to go broad side or a55 to the enemy is hard. For Recce it is normal. Tankers don't get off the damn thing. A Recce Dude would be stupid not to. :tank:

Dave and Dave.....It looks like you are both talking the same thing, just not clarifying when and how a Patrol works by itself.  All tasks, whether Patrol, Troop or Sqn are dealt out by the Sqn Comd or higher.  Dave is saying that a Patrol is quite often the working "unit" in a Recce Sqn/Regiment.  Dave on the other hand is saying that the Sqn works as a whole.  In fact, both Daves are correct, just looking at it from different points of view, but both agreeing on what the doctrine is.

Clear as mud....Dave and Dave.....comments?

Hello
With regards to the comment about the BTS, yes there are tasks for the sqn, however there are tasks that are tasked down to the patrol level, it is stated in the letters that explains exactly what the troops are to do in the publication. You will have to understand the BTS fully to know how the tasks work. Not to insult anyones intel, but the BTS is a valuable tool and if followed properly, it takes up a lot of trg time, however given the fact that BTS timelines are dictated by bde in the yearly Op plan, bde does give timelines to when the units must complete the BTS level. We also have to remember that if tasked with an Operation, the sqn or formation (usually not a sqn proper) will focus on DLOC vs the BTS. Almost the same thing but with the check marks coming from patrol and troop live fires in different phases of the battle. As the BTS book is outdated, it will take a while to catch up to the modern equip, so that the ISTAR will become part of the BTS.

TCP's(traffic control points) and convoy escort are secondary tasks we do in our Regiment, they help to develop your skills further and add a little more excitment than sitting in an OP all day lol. Depending on what phase your in, the Advance or the Defensive will determine what secondary task you will be assigned to do.
