SESAME STREET seeks access to Gaza strip of Palestine

Big Bird and his pals are trying hard to get access to the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip to talk about peaceful conflict resolution and carry out some Muppet Diplomacy, Sesame Street announced on Wednesday.

"We know that it's an extremely volatile area, but we also feel that it's really important that we take these step forward to promote self esteem for Palestinians," said Gary Knell, president of the Sesame Workshop, the educational organisation behind the popular children's series.


A Palestinian version of the series -- Sharaa Simsim -- is already shown in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, but the signal does not reach Gaza, an impoverished and overcrowded territory struggling to recover from Israel's devastating military offensive at the turn of the year.

As goofy as it may seem at first blush, when you compare it to the alternative kids' programming Hamas broadcasts (calling for the "slaughter" of Jews, or re-enacting the death of a woman with her kid on the show), I'd rather have Big Bird & Co. give it a go.

Also, let's not forget the Sesame Street Workshop folks are doing what appears to be decent work with American military families on some tough issues such as deployment, homecoming and changes.

Sesame Street has been adapted for a number of foreign audiences (remember, we're one of them). It was really weird seeing the French version of the Sesame Street muppets for the first time.
