Several people killed, others injured after vehicle drives into Vancouver street festival crowd: police

Vancouver police say several people have been killed and multiple others injured after a vehicle drove into a crowd at a street festival Saturday evening.

The incident happened shortly after 8 p.m. near East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street, where the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party was taking place.

Police said the driver is in custody.

I was just getting caught on on this.
  • 9 dead as of early this morning. Others in hospital.
  • Driver in custody, 30 year old male, and is previously known to police in the context of mental health.
  • There’s video of the driver being detained; Asian male, looks pretty out of it.
  • There’s video of an Audi SUV with the front smashed all to hell and fluid leaking. The damage looks to be from hitting people.
  • Police don’t believe this was terrorism.

A witness described a typical “street festival close to wrapping up” scene; the vehicle pulled up to a barrier slowly, a volunteer opened the barrier to let the vehicle in. This was typical of, eg, vendors going into pack up. The vehicle slowly drove in, hit one person, and then accelerated into the crowd hitting people ‘like bowling pins’. The driver exited the vehicle and was detained by witnesses.

Stuff I’m separately hearing from people in a position to know corroborates it being a severe mental health episode rather than ideologically motivated. Vancouver Police homicide has the file.

Not everything needs a Toronto nexus.

This is a Canadian "nexus."

At the time, it was the biggest mass murder in Canada since the Montreal massacre.

No doubt the vehicular rampage in Vancouver will be compared to the one in Toronto. ( A five page thread on here devoted to it. )

In fact, the nexus has already has been compared by The Canadian Press,

A 25-year-old Canadian man, Alek Minassian, drove a rented van into mostly female pedestrians on Yonge St., the main thoroughfare in Toronto, killing 10 people and injuring 16.

Sorry I was first to mention the nexus on here. No offense intended.

Condolences to the families and rest to the dead.

Yes. Condolences to the families and rest to the dead.

Terrible stuff...

Man arrested after vehicle strikes crowd at Lapu Lapu event celebrating Filipino culture

Pangilinan said the show was wrapping up, and the festival's main act — Filipino American rapper Apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas — had already finished his set. Crews were in the process of tearing down the stage, tents and vendor stalls when the incident happened.

He said crews lifted a barricade that had been blocking traffic to allow a vehicle to enter. While some cars were being guided carefully through the crowds, Pangilinan said one car suddenly plowed through the street at high speed.

"Then we realized what was happening and everybody started yelling," he said. "[The driver] just slammed the pedal down and rammed into hundreds of people. It was like seeing a bowling ball hit — all the bowling pins and all the pins flying up in the air."

Pangilinan, who has previously worked in news, said witnessing what happened in person was overwhelming.

"As someone who worked in news, you get numb to seeing these things — but seeing it in real life is just shocking," he said.

"It was like a war zone.... There were bodies all over the ground," he said, adding he saw "countless" people injured.

The vehicle stopped at a barrier, and was allowed in by a volunteer who moved the barrier. A witness who was there said this had been going on routinely.

NDP 'soft on crime policy' criticisms now kicking off....

I don’t think the necessary information is yet publicly known for those sorts of criticisms. We don’t know if this person’s mental health history includes any significant criminal offending. We also don’t know what if any determinations have been made about him by medical professionals, mental health review board, etc.

Any criticism should be waiting for/seeking more information at this stage.

At these sort of festivals, allowing vehicles in at the beginning and nearing the end is normal routine. As participants are loading and unloading their booth/stalls

Death toll in Vancouver SUV attack rises to 11; Carney cancels large rallies. Live updates here

I suspect the Carney event cancellations are as much a matter of delayed timings as anything. This event had him late out the gate this morning; Hamilton - Saskatoon - Calgary - Edmonton is a heavy day. Not much room there to delay the start and keep everything.

I wonder if it's out of caution as well for copy cat attacks? Usually these style attacks are never just 1

VPD has been pretty open about the fact the perpetrator in this case has a long mental health history with Police and they do not believe this to be ideological or terrorism based.

But yeah they may be worried about opportunists I guess
