Small question about eye protection

Hello Army.ca,

I have one question regarding the  ballistic protection glasses and ballistic protective visor. I was watching a video of a .177 round ball being stoped by both eye protectors, but I noticed a lot of tiny glass pieces flying very close to where the eyes are. Is there a chance of the glasses back firing shards into your eye when impacted? or is it designed to release particles forward? This is an amature question, but it has been in my head for a long time.

You were given good advice, including suggestions to read and use the Search Function, following your last post.

Carrying on as you are is going to earn you a poor reputation and people are not going to help you when you really need it.

You are new to both the Armed Forces and this site, and young, so we'll cut you some slack but not much and not for long.

This site is run and heavily populated by former and current serving members. As such, it reflects the nature of the Armed Forces, and there are therefore certain expectations.

One is that members do some research prior to asking a question, which has generally been asked and answered at least once before. If you genuinely try and cannot find an answer, then we will be pleased to help - but you will receive neither assistance nor sympathy by being lazy.

Ignoring advice, both from experienced members here and/or experienced Officers, Warrant Officers, and NCOs at your unit, will not benefit you in either place.

You can get a lot out of this site, and we want you to. You have to make a bit of an effort, though.

Ballistic eyewear will provide protection, but not invulnerability.

As far as I can tell, our issued Revision Sawflys provide a higher standard of protection than most other popular brands of BEW. Apparently, this is the conclusion the army came to when testing different kinds of BEW for standard issue. It is also the conclusion drawn from an independant test I posted a link to on one of the other BEW threads. I also know guys who've tested the issued BEW against shrapnel in Afghanistan... under real world conditions, if you catch my drift...

Whether or not our eye protection is comfortable is open for debate.  I'm confidant though, in their ability to protect my peepers - at least better then alot of stuff out there.

CADPAT, you're questions are tough ones.  Anything can happen with regards to shrapnel.  I actually challenged myself to find the answer using the search button ("ballistic eyewear") and the best I could come up with (without getting really bored reading through a ton of posts) was a mention of the ANSI ratings in a post about eyewear in Afghanistan.  That might help you out.

As for the chances of it happening, who knows?  I got blowed up by the badguy Talibans Insurgents and although everyone was okay and wearing their BEW, my scope on my rifle to the right of me (the blast was all on the left side) had a chip in it.  How'd it get hit?  I don't know but I'm happy it wasn't me that got the piece.
