He opposed remounting Dieppe, so I know you don‘t mean that. In Sicily, the Canadian Division was given some tough assignements Assoro comes to mind which they handled well. Not sure if Monty really caused any undue casualties there, either. In fact, he even recognized that 1 Cdn Div wasn‘t acclimated to the tropics and gave them a day off at the start of the campaign, didn‘t he?

As for Normandy, I don‘t think there was any way out of the slogging match around Caen - the majority of German armour was up against the Canadians and British, and a lot of the formations in 21 Army Group were either war-weary or else completely inexperienced.

Its an interesting point you make, Jules.
