EDMONTON - An Edmonton-based soldier is dead after his pickup truck rolled Tuesday night just north of the city, military officials say.
Just after 6 p.m., Master Cpl. Don Pike, 35, tried to pass other vehicles on 66th Street during off-duty hours on Canadian Forces Base Edmonton. The truck ultimately went into the ditch and rolled.
Pike was a member of the 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry at Canadian Forces Base Edmonton.
He joined the Forces in 1996.
Pike deployed to Kosovo in 1999, Bosnia in 2002-2003 and Afghanistan in 2006 during his 12 years of service. He had volunteered for a second tour of duty in Afghanistan this fall, Lt.-Col. Jerry Walsh said.
Pike was pronounced dead at the scene. Morinville RCMP was called in to investigate and have not yet ruled out speed or alcohol as factors.
