Sources told the ABC members of the Townsville-based 10th Force Support Battalion were recently informed they should not be receiving a special seagoing benefit that was paid in error.

Some marine specialists have been told the overall hit to their finances could be more than $15,000 a year and they must now repay any money paid to them incorrectly.

"Asking people to pay back a decade of allowances while also struggling to retain and recruit seems mind-blowing," one figure familiar with the situation says.
