This was the coolest thing to watch today.  Elon Musk and his team have launched their largest rocket to date and have sent a Tesla Roadster with passenger towards Mars.

Replay of the live show earlier today.

Largest since the Saturn 5 that is. Not to forget our Soviet/Russian colleagues.

This is a game changer.  SpaceX has delivered a system that carries twice the weight of the next closest performing rocket, but at 25% of the cost.

Right. We have a leap in space economics by roughly an order of magnitude on this one. Game changer is right.

At the very least, the synchronised booster landings and everything else are amazing to watch.  The Roadster was just the icing on the cake.  If l understand it correctly, it was his personal car too.

Well, that was the plan, at least.  Looks like they cracked the throttle a little too long and it's on the way to the Asteroid Belt.

Man, I hate it when that happens.

Musk is a weird character for me, I'm not that enthralled with him because overall I think he is great at using other peoples money to make himself rich while producing nothing of any real value in return.  I seriously doubt any of his companies will ever be profitable and his projects are funded off the back of government subsidies.

I suppose all the guys cut from his cloth are weird to some degree or another, otherwise they wouldn't be successful at doing what they do (I think it is part of their driving factors).  Like him/believe in him or not, he is accomplishing "something", that is without question.  Whether is it sustainable, only time will tell.

I was more enthralled with what was happening, not by who was doing it.  It could have been NASA, or the Russians or any other space types out there behind the launch and recovery.  To think that the rocket boosters can take off and return home like a Homing Pigeon is for me, really cool to think about and see.  I remember the space race and the landings on the moon, first shuttle flight etc.  It still captures my attention and awe to this day.

It's too bad the center core failed to land on the drone ship. Hopefully next time they'll get all three.

I kept refreshing twitter for updates from SpaceX as to the status of the center core.

I don't even have twitter.
