Specialty Cross-Training

Hello All,

Not sure where to post this question, and i couldn't find the answer anywhere else, so I will just ask since it is just something i have thought about and wondering what the answer is.

I am going off for training as a Crewman in July. I know this will be my trade and such, and there is different specialty training available once i complete basic and such but what i was wondering is as an Armoured Soldier or any other trade for that matter, is there a chance to train in a specialty training course offered through OTHER trades. For instance when the time comes (if it does...) would I be able to request to be trained as a Ship's Diver? Just wondering what the stance is on "Cross-Training" of that nature, if I have my wording correct. Thanks for your help .

Cheers.
Steven Wollen

Short and Sweet. Thank you very much

Are you allowed to cross train specialty courses in other Combat Arms trades or Army Trades...or is that just a general no speciality training outside your trade? thanks again

Cheers,

Some courses are available to multiple trades, some are not. Each course specifies which trade it is open to and what the pre-requisites are.

Not quite true.  If the member were to get posted to a coast, say in an ATR position, there is a chance to get on the Ship's Diver course.  It is fairly common that the courses are not fully loaded so then a trawl is sent out to see if anyone can be spared.  So if you are posted in Pet and you ask for it, you wont get it, but if you are posted to Halifax, know, or have a boss who knows someone in FDU, there happens to be an opening on the slot, and you can be spared, then you could get the course.

Quite a few people get on courses this way, but you cannot expect to ask for, and attend courses outside your trades or universal specialties.

I am aware of that. I even know a 021 who was qualified ship's diver as he spent some time working at DCIEM doing tests. Outide of some very limited set of circumstances a 011 will not likely find himself/herself on a course that falls well outside of common CF/environmental/trade courses. I beleive that is what the OP was getting at.

For now you should just focus on your BMQ and DP1.

Be happy that you got a spot to be an armoured soldier.

Some people are still waiting 1-3+ years.

Being trained as a ship's diver would have helped me get out of my vehicle two days ago....

Yes, what qualifications did you have that might have helped you along? I'm interested in knowing, as that and infantry are the only two things I'm looking at in my slow-motion application process.

As CDN Aviator says, an Armour guy isn't likely to get such a crse, as they would not likely be posted to Halifax or Esquimalt.  Not much call for Ship's Diver in Edmonton, Petawawa, Valcartier or Gagetown.

Not really "Cross Training" but there are many courses that are common to more than one Trade or Environment.  You will still not likely get on one until you have had some time in though.

Not sure really. I don't know if any of these played any roll but as far as experience and knowledge I do have... I have been since I was 13, I am now 23...I have some univeristy courses under my belt as well as college. I can speak French and German fairly well. I did pretty well in my interview and on my CFAT...not sure if I had anything qualifications relating to the Armoured trade however. Calling to remind them every few weeks doesn't hurt though...lets them know you are still interested.

I know its cliche and everyone says it but its true : Wait it out, eventually you will get a call whenever more Infantry or Armoured Soldiers are needed. Cheers and best of luck.

Also thanks everyone for all the responses. I am 100% focused on my BMQ, I was simply using this post as a vehicle for a question I did not know the answer to, as to my knowledge, this is the purpose of this site. Give knowledge to this who lack it. Cheers Everyone

There is lots of training you might end up doing in your career that is open to any MOSID. What is likely is another story.

I was curious however and did a query on what are the "active" qualifications targeted at the Armoured Crewman.  There is some pretty neat training available without going outside the MOSID.  It kind of makes me want to be back in the combat arms!

Before I post the list, the disclaimer is that I am not in the RCAC and have no real experience with them.  This is the list that I received (with some edits for clarity) when the query was placed "what are the active national qualifications that are targeted at the MOC 011 NCM but not core qualifications levels. So... some of these might still be on the books for one reason or another but impossible to get.  Or might be so specific you need to be in a limited job to get them... with that in mind I found the list quite interesting... some of it does not make sense to me, but I will attribute this to my ignorance of the happenings in the RCAC.

I hope this of some interest / generates some conversation.
