Strike

So you can be fined and kicked out of the union for not supporting it, but you have to keep contributing union dues and you still get all the benefits ? What a strange beast.
They threatened all of that when the Strike vote happened (to this day no one knows what the actual turn out and vote tally was and they had a very Byzantine method to allow members to vote )

I spent some time trying to calm people down about what amounted to empty threats.

We did not have, and did not seek, the right to strike. You could be kicked out of the union. But, not fired.

"Other than for engaging in unlawful activity against the union."

The vote turn out for PSAC in 2023 was revealed in a Federal Public Service Labour Relations and Employment Board decision, after a Rand submitted a complaint about the way the strike vote was conducted.

Bump: Apparently PSAC members who didn't take strike pay are now being accused of crossing the picket line. And some of them are pissed.

I must be missing something (never been a member of a union). It is my understanding that in order to receive strike pay you have to actively participate in the strike; picket duties, etc. You could simply sit at home watching soaps and receive nothing. That's a long way from being a 'scab' (crossing the line).

Part of the argument is a non-member benefits from any raise, benefit enhancement, etc. that the union negotiates. For the first number of years of our police association being a bargaining unit, we historically had a small handful of service members, like 2 or 3, who refused to join the association. At some point it became a 'close shop' and they no longer had the option. Unless things have changed since I left, the association has a duty to represent WRT grievances, but the legal indemnification fund is set up separately and a member could, in writing, elect not to be covered. I don't recall anybody doing that.
