I‘ve just been informed by my OPsO that BOTP-R and CAP-R have been moved/switched from Gagetown to Petawawa. As far as I know, the dates are to remain the same. Best everyone confirm for themselves.

I‘m not too sure what is going on at Meaford this summer (rumours were abound that these courses were going to be offered there), but I‘m thinking that they are just having NCM training there.

Anyone know what is going on?

I had heard that the BMQ was in Gagetown this summer. Maybe June 9... ish... Not too sure. Still waiting to be sworn in so that I can find it exactly what‘s going on...

Can anyone post the dates for the BMQ (Montreal Area) and the CAP (R)

Thanks!

First of all OCdt Gran...

Please get the names right.

BMQ (or BRT is its old name) is for NCMs, as is SQ.
IAP/BOTP would be the equivalent courses for Officers.

There are significant differences in the course curriculum, mostly a lot of leadership jumbo thrown into the BOTP part of the officer course.

Actually.....

BMQ for reserves is for both NCMs and Officers.

So he‘s not too far off.

You guys are both right and wrong.

For the Res world, BMQ(R) is for NCMs; BOTP(R) is for officers. BMQ(R) and BOTP(R) share a lot of the same curriculum but BOTP(R) has a leadership ortion to it, so that‘s why you see officer candidates and private recruits on the same course together for the weekend courses.

SQ is definitely just for NCM. CAP is for officers and the emphasis start diverging quite a bit more than between BMQ and BOTP.

Illucigen: Thank you kindly for correcting me... It was just that a RegFor WO had told me that they were essentially the same thing. I guess he may be wrong....

I had been told that officers and NCMs trained together as the basics are the basics for everyone - whether you are a private or a 2Lt.

But.... given that you did get my meaning, I guess that‘s all that matters. :)

TO the original question:

Does anybody know the dates in may or june for BOTP (R)?

Thanks!!

BOTP(R) has two parts. BOTP(R)1 is, to my knowledge, identical to BMQ(R). BOTP(R)2 is the leadership add-on.

The BOTP (R)1 you speak of is common to both Reg and Res.

Its called IAP. Not BOTP.

IAP= Initial Assessment period. And as stated above, it basically deals with military basics (drill, rifles, discipline, uniforms, ethics, etc etc). If you are successfull in this, and at the officer level, you normally have to show leadership qualities as well, you are allowed to go to BOTP which is the leadership portion of the course, with its assessments and everything.

CAP or Common Army Phase is Phase 2 (IAP/BOTP is phase 1) of Army Officer Training. Since everyone in the army has to know how to command a section, the first part of CAP usually deals with this, and the latter part sometimes delves into the basics of your MOC, at least at the Reg force level. (Ie Armour gets driving/maintenance info on the leopard at end of CAP)

I am very familiar with this, as I went through it last year.

Last year, there were 2 options for new Reserve Officers.
1) Take a full 5-week BOTP(R) course (summer), before proceeding to CAP(R); or
2) Take BMQ at unit level with NCMs (20 days training), then take 5-day BOTP(2) (this is what they called it last summer). The combination of these 2 courses gave you the same standing as those taking the 5 week BOTP, i.e. it qualified you to take CAP(R). (This is what I did)

I believe that for Reserve Officers, they are now calling the whole process "BMOQ" (Basic Military Officer Qualification), whether taken as option 1 or 2. Regardless of what the courses are called, the process is as I have described above.

The IAP/BOTP terminology and course breakdown is unique to the Regular Force.

Here is what I have for the BOTP-R and CAP-R for this summer. Now, remember, this is from a schedule I received in January and it was for Gage; meaning, that it has likely been revised. As we know, some of the courses have been moved to Pet; and, as far as I know, the dates are the same. But, it is best to check for yourselves.

For those who just completed the weekender BOTP-R:
CAP-R 5 May to 6 June (3 sections)

For the FNGs:
BOTP-R 26 May to 2 July (2 sections)
CAP-R 3 July to 8 Aug

BOTP-R 9 June to 11 July (2 sections)
CAP-R 14 July to 15 Aug

In response to the initial post here, the course has now been moved out to Gagetown from Petawawa. This is due to OP Athena and the demands it is placing on LFCA.
