Here`s something the Marines are doing ref local languages overseas - very interesting

Languages are

DARI and PASHTO

Note they mention Tactical Dari and Tactical Pashto

I would say we have a long way to go before we are comfortable with this per the recent operaitonal tempo stuff impeding absorbing French. And this ain`t flame bait.

No, but many USMC units must work through the 'unofficial bilingualism' this is Puerto Rican-type Spanish. The major difference being, they don't seem to be constantly whining about it.

On that subject, the American Armed Forces do have serious problems along those lines.  Not being in their military, we seldom hear of them.

Yes.

And not being constrained with other "Official Language" rules, they are able to better concentrate training towards foreign languages as the needs arise.  They have done so in the past, even during the Vietnam War, when they trained Green Berets as linguists. 

They are a lot less tied up around the axles, so to speak, than we are, to teach foreign languages outside of the "Official Language(s)" of the country.  Remember, the US is "Officially" Unilingual.

A skill we should be practicing, especially at junior levels, is talking through an interpreter, and tactical interview techniques in general.
