For anyone who's gone on leave in Thailand, do you have an suggestions or recommendations for someone heading there the first time?
Any nice places to visit, historical stuff, nice beaches, surfing?

The Bridge on the River Kwai ( the real one) at Kanchanabari is about 2 hours form Bangkok and there are fulld ay and half tours available from most major hotels and tiny hle in the wall taravel agencies. Book the fulld ay one. Bus takes you to Kanchanabari nd there is time to vist the Death Railway Museum and the larger of the two Miltary Cememetaries as well as the Bridge. After you ride the Actual railway ovee the Kwai River up through Hell Fire Pass before boarding buses back to Bangkok.

Plenty to do in Bangkok itself, must does are a massage ( a real one) and shopping at Patpongs Night Market. You can also hav a suit done up. Many of the better Hong Kong Tailors relcoated here in 1999.

Go catch some fights at Lumpini Stadium, it's off the hook.  Ratchadamnoen is also good, but lumpini is more fun and is considered a little better. Both are pretty easy to get to in BK and easy to get tickets for (around 15-50 bucks CND) depending on seating and the fights.  You may want to avoid the betting section seats...can get a little nutty  ;D

Avoid Pattaya like the plague. If you want something quiet and isolated, you can go to Koh Chang. It's a nice little island SE of Thailand. Only Bangkok Airways fly to Trang and I suggest you book a hotel and transfer in advance as you will need to get to the ferry and there are no "taxis" on the island. Phuket is a good tourist destination, my wife runs a tourism shop there. Lots to see and do. If you don't like the ocean, you can always head North to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai. When I was in Chiang Rai, we rented a car. I suggest you get international driver license if you want to do the same. For motorbikes you don't really need a driver license but be prepared to get stopped by the police and pay a fine. You can PM me for more info you like, I've been there numerous times and even married a thai  :P

Phuket if you are more relationship oriented... The wife, even kids would enjoy it there. Beautiful beaches, lots of outdoor activities, and helluva inexpensive.

Single guy? Pattaya. Think think, sin city. Still elements that are family friendly there, but for the most part it is a young guy's paradise/ Everything but gambling to be had there. Open air Thai boxing bars are really cool there, keep a couple of Baht in your pocket for tips (it's how they live). Whatever you do, no matter how good a fighter you are, do NOT get in the ring with these fellas. They will let you beat on them for two to three rounds. And then you are done.

Go ahead and rent a car if you are brave (they drive on the left, and they occasionally obey the rules of the road). You will not come close to exceeding your travel expenses limit. I rented one there while we were on Roto 13, and did not exceed my transportation allowance. If you are going to stay mostly stationary (like park in Phuket for the entire time) don't bother with the car rental, as tuk-tuks will get you everywhere you need to go in town for just a couple of Baht.

Make sure you have a camera, because you will have a helluva great time.
