Retch:

Garth Turner accuses Canadian military of pursuing the destruction of Afghan villages
http://stevejanke.com/archives/262364.php

Babbling Brooks comments at The Torch:

That's even more clueless than Janke realizes.

The shells Turner is referring to are the Excalibur 155mm precision munitions discussed all over the place around here [The Torch] - use the search function at the top of the blog if you want to read up.

The reason we've bought them is so that we can take an indirect fire system (the M777) that's normally accurate to within 50m at close to 40km range, and make it accurate to within 10m at the same range.

Why would we want to do that, you ask? So that we can take out the bad guys in the village without destroying the rest of it, or killing any of the civilians caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In other words, those shells were bought specifically so that we don't destroy a village in Afghanistan.

If $150K is outrageous, as he suggests, it's time to ask Garth how much a villager's life in Afghanistan is worth to him.

Garth is usually a little hyperactive with his hyperbole, but this is way over the top, even for a So-Stuck-On-Stupid politician as Garth.

Frankly it is quite disgusting he would even suggest it, let alone make it out to be a statement of fact.

Can we vote this clown Garth off of the island yet? He's in fine fine political form with that commentary.

Let's "volunteer" Garth to go on the next "MP's visit Afghanistan"  trip.

We can sit him down for dinner at the same table as the Gunners.

Now that would be an interesting table talk session.

Never underestimate the power of human stupidity... There is only one cure for it......

I fired off an email to  Mr Turner tonight:

Mr Turner,
I read recently that during a meeting that you bemoaned the fact that
$150,000 couldn't be found for a youth centre, but the Army could
destroy and Afghan village with a piece of ordnance.
Allow me to enlighten you to some facts.

1. The 155mm Excalibur round is a precision guided artillery round
intended to minimize collateral damage in order to destroy a military
target. Rather than hammering away at it with indiscriminately causing
needless damage.
It is used ONLY when a specific target is identified that directly
threatens Canadian and Coalition troops.

2. To imply that Canadian troops are randomly levelling Afghan villages
willy nilly is the most ridiculous and ill-informed statement uttered by
an elected official.

You obviously have no idea about what Canadian soldiers are doing in
Afghanistan, nor do you want to.
As a serving member of the Army I am very offended by your statement,
and will not accept elected officials using the military as a carpet to
wipe their feet on when it is politically expedient to do so.
Many of us have seen the devastation in those villages brought by the
Taliban for merely speaking with ISAF soldiers.
Too many of our brothers and sisters have paid the price for doing what
our country have asked us to do, but we are resilient Mr Turner we will
continue to serve with distinction. Going where others fear to tread in
order to make life a little better for those who not only need us, but
want us.
I am proud of my service to my country, and to that end am about to
embark on my fourth tour of duty in Afghanistan in August. Not because I
have to, but because I want to.
So Mr Turner you can sit on the side lines and bad mouth those who give
you that right to do so, or you can take a trip and visit us in Kandahar
nad really make up your own mind. Either way members of the Canadian
Forces are voters too.

His reply:

The words you refer to were taken out of context from a newspaper report and interpreted and embellished by a political opponent of mine who was not at the meeting in which they were spokem.

As such, this is a great example of the political smear. Of course I am aware of the shells, their origin, purpose and usage. I also voted to extend the Afghan mission - twice. I believe our troops are fighting for the principles of freedom and democracy, as much as some people here try to defeat it with deliberate falsehoods.

Thank you for your service to Canada.

Hon. Garth Turner PC, MP

OK!  Everybody STOP!

Don't move.

Now slowly look around and make sure you don't miss anything.

We now have a National search on to find the "missing Garth Turner Tapes".

Mr Turner replied:

Of course I am aware of the shells, their origin, purpose and usage.

If so he has more knowledge about Canadian Army artillery than the great majority of MPs of all parties.

I hae me douts.

Folks, please try and be civil in your comments.

I don't have them.

p.s. I had the Somalia log on my hard drive. I also have a range card for the grassy knoll. And I have a klignon-Sasquatch dictionary from Roswell.

Benefit of the doubt would only be reinforced by a public refutation.  We have all seen elements of the press running a story a little too soon, and thus getting things out of context, so this is a plausible explanation.  Further, as far as I am aware, he has not smeared us like this in the past.

I'll be checking the wires for more on this story tomorrow... For tonight, more painting.

More like gag!

I will be more civil  ;)

Summing up....

I am sure he will be doing his best political spin to backpaddle himself up 'that' creek using his bare hands, and using his tongue as a rudder!

He will be getting lots of unapproving emails and letters over this one, but does he really care?

Start squirming Garth, Canada is watching.

*sigh* I am human, and I err. I am ready to vote this guy off the island again. I have seen some two faced double talk in my time, but this creature in question has a blog, telling an interesting yarn of double talk.

Anyways, he most definatly is not worth the time of day, and so I mus...

Oh, a butterfly!

Not one  but two different papers and authors.

Smell that?  Smells like...

Just a small point but the second article is a blog that is quoting the first article. Therefore not two separate articles. I've also had a chance to rethink this somewhat, based upon the tendencies of the MSM....

Doug Saunders of the Globe and Mail is channeling Garth Turner:

Lest anyone think this is a soft or peaceful process, Cdr. Dwyer's base was rocked, every minute or so all day, by the terrifying shock of its line of 155-mm howitzers firing their village-destroying shells over the hills and into the Korengal Valley ["Commander Dan Dwyer of the U.S. Navy...runs the provincial reconstruction team just to the south, in Asadabad"]...
