The Great Gun Control Debate- 2.0

For me it’s the women in leather clothing thread (granted, I did start that thread).

Sir, I have no idea what you're talking about ;)

So happy to see this.

Another boss move by Bermuda Tim!

See, its remarks like that that make me give you side eye. I am not sure what the intent is behind that.
I'm confused why you're confused. Tim Houston is the best Premier I've ever lived under (IMO). I'm regularly impressed by him and hope he governs NS for a long time.

Question for the field.

If Carneybowed to the weight of not being able to implement the buyback and off ramped by grandfathering all 2500+ models as a special class firearm that is prohib unless registered by Oct 31 2026, in which case

  • they function as NR's for use/storage/transport etc. with the caveat that
    • they are not eligible for PAL to PAL transfer, loan, consignment etc. BUT
      • Can be surrendered at any point in the next ten years for the listed compensation + CPI (guaranteed)
And does the above via OIC protected legislation so that the registration can't be used for a regulatory rug pull without an act of parliament

Would you register?

Nice try, CFP.

There will be no off-ramps. This is a no-fail project driven by the need to protect the LPC center of gravity in QC. The PS minister-in-waiting will not allow the government to walk this back in any form. See my post above where the current PS minister has tripled-down on "making this work".

What has the LPC done on this file leads you to believe guns owners would trust a single thing coming out of their mouths?

The former prime minister and p
ublic safety minister got caught flat out lying.

This public safety minister got caught calling out the program for being a bullshit bone for the french. And they short changed their own compensation program after already short changing it.

Jeepers lol

Change the who then. Make it a CPC proposal to try and find a compromise that protects current gun owners without tanking the next election.
Would you see it as pragmatic advocacy or selling out?

This feels like a "see ? Gun owners aren’t law abiding after all" paradox".

Switching the LPC and CPC is like switching a shit sandwich with a grilled cheese. Not at all the same ball park.

It's an attempt to try an get you to engage in the actual premise rather than getting lost in the us vs them rage.

I'll boil it down- is there any off ramp, any compromise, that you would find palatable other than a full rollback to 2019?

I dont know about @Jarnhamar but i find the banning of SA to be a bit of a red line. So yeah i want a rollback to 2019 and more as there is no reason to ban AR-15s and their derivatives either IMO

How about a rollback to pre-Bill C68 along with a public acknowledgement that legal firearms owners are NOT a significant source of firearms related crime? Follow this with a non-partisan study of pre-Bill C68 regulations in the light of present day situational factors and then re-draft the Firearms Act as a result of that study so it actually impacts criminals more than lawful owners?

Regarding off-ramps, I fully expect the bans to be expanded, not reduced, in the coming months to ensure support remains high in QC and among voters in large urban centres in the rest of Canada. Any attempt to build an off-ramp would, in my opinion, cause a caucus revolt by Liberal party QC MPs led by none other than our PS minister-in-waiting.

As I recall the last LPC caucus revolt on this file was in the the other direction when the anti-'s pushed farther than popular opinion would take with Chiang amendment. Seems like public sentiment is building that way on the confiscation. My read is that there's a public opinion split on "concept" of the listed firearms being banned (majority indifference), vice immediate human impact of the confiscation and ban (growing proportional showing frustration at the injustice and waste). Tough road to hoe for a PM that would rather focus on the global picture and economy.

First off I want my laws to be logic based and not emotion based. Set the criteria for each category for physical clearly defined characteristics and go from there.

Pre-2019 were not that but they were much closer than the greatly expanded OIC nonsense we have now. You shouldn’t be able to declare specific firearms illegal ‘just because’.

Last time they did a non-partisan study (Harper era) the recommendations included making some prohibited classes restricted and some clear cut regulatory changes. Harper basically rejected them for political reasons but the recommendations made technical sense.
