The secret Mulroney Tapes

So what you're saying is that they came across as screwed up and incompitent as the Liberal Party that controls them... ;D

That would be a "YES"  ;D

I just saw it last night on the passionate eye (i think) and I have to say I was impressed.  I think it will make alott of people rethink how they feal, not only about Mulroney but also Turner and Trudeu<sp?>.  An example of this is that I got my parents to watch it last night. After the movie they had changed from hating Mulroney to having respect for him and from loving Trudeu<sp?> to thinking he was a "jeleous dumb-ass".
I dont know if alot of people have changed thier views but I know some have.

Props to your brother Sheerin on making a good documentary

ambex, thank you, that validates what I thought too. I grew up during Trudeau mania and while I have to admit my complete complicity at that time with whatever Pierre said had to be true, I saw Mulroney in this documentary as being a man of substance. I would have never thought that at the time. The older I get, the more I realize how manipulated I was, as a youth, by the media. I am much more suspect of the media now, but at the time, I was completely bit by the Trudeau bug.

Having said that, I would still say, that like him or hate him, Trudeau got a whole generation to think about politics, something I don't think Canadian youth did much of before he hit the media.

Regarding the show, it's really a shame that Mulroney's 'good friend'   who did the taping, didn't expose that side of the man, the real Mulroney, at the time. If he truly was a friend, he would have, through his medium, have tried a hellofalot harder to get the public to see his friend for the true patriot he was. That's the shame I felt after watching that show, I wish I had known all that, what Mulroney really felt,   when I was casting my ballots. I admit I totally bought into the "mulroney is just a pawn for the U.S.". Upon reflection, I wonder just how wrong I really was.

I dunno...to me, the show made him out to be some kind of arrogant, vain, vulgar boob.  It struck me as a pre-election hit piece courtesy of your Liberal-friendly CBC.

Wow, you have absolutely no idea what you're taking about.  This documentary has been in the works for close to a year now and it wasn't the CBC that solicited it, rather it was my brother and his exec. producer who brought it to them.  My brother, who produced and directed The Biographers Voice, the biography of Peter C. Newman for CBC's Life and Times last year.  During the course of shooting (which took my brother and Newman across Europe), Peter and my brother became friends.  Sometime later Newman approached my brother and offered him the rights to the book, and with that my brother and his exec. producer went to CBC, who bought it.  Originally the doc was supposed to air Sept/Oct, basically right on the heels of the publication of Newman's book but the lockout pushed production back - basically because my brother needed access to the CBC archives.

One other tidbit, Mulroney liked the piece and basically said that he was glad that [my brother] included the context of the conversations; Mulroney thought it was fair.

So if he thought it was fair, what right do you have to say that it was a piece of liberal propaganda.

What the hell was Peter Newman thinking? He came off looking like the biggest loser IMO. Several times during that show Mulroney said 'between you and me'. It was obvious this man needed an understanding friend to unload on. Newman saw dollars signs. With friends like him, who needs enemies? This man betrayed a trust between friends. He's a lowlife.

It mattered nothing to me what Mulroney said. It was the betrayal of the trust between what one man thought was a friend and the other man who recorded conversations for later prosperity that struck me. Nothing Mulroney said betrayed national secrets, he was talking about his opinions on events and people that unfolded around him, from one friend to another.

Peter Newman is despicable. Your brother's documentary exposed the biographer as a money grubbing lowlife journalist and Mulroney as a man in need of a safe friend to talk to. Poor Brian, too bad he wasn't more savvy when it comes to friendship. I don't doubt he wanted this to air, it completely exonerates him IMO.

Well in newman's defense he and Mulroney did have an agreement for Newman to be his offical biographer...

I kinda doubt it, though you could check the bittorrent sites.

If you can, its airing tomorrow night on Newsworld at 10pm....

Official biographer or not, Mulroney said a few times ...this is between you and me, this is off the record...

IMO it was unethical for Newman not to inform Mulroney during those conversations that nothing was 'off the record'. Why didn't he just say, "look, I'm your official biographer, everything you say to me is on the record, so govern yourself accordingly". Just my .02.
